He was wounded while preparing for Sunday morning sermon when walking down a dirt road, a “Jap” ambushed him from behind a bush. He was shot twice in the leg before the Jap realized that he was a “man of cloth”, the lone soldier walked up toward him, saw the cross on his colar and bowed down before him apologizing to him. He quickly got up and disappeared into the wooded area.

Received the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Philippines Island conflict.
