He expected to get drafted so decided to enlist so that he could choose his branch of service. When he went to enlist he
was told that he couldn't, his draft notice was on its way. He was given his choice of service branch.
He was originally going
to be sent to the Pacific theater. He was even told to send the cold weather gear home. He was sent to San Francisco after
Bombardier
school to await final orders. During this time, the D-Day invasion plans began and his destination changed to the European theater.
He was shot down
over Italy on the ninth mission. Crew bailed from airplane. Recent discussions between surviving crew (all but one is still alive) indicates that one of the crew risked his life to save another, but I don't remember the full details. The crew was separated during bail out. My dad and at least one other met some Italians who were going to help them get to Switzerland, but the Italians turned them over to the Germans instead.
