Went to boot Camp and Hospital Corps School at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois (north of Chicago)
After school he was stationed at Great Lakes working in the Naval Hospital. The hospital held more than 1,000 patients, most of them were
wounded Vietnam Vets. He worked in the contaminated orthopaedic ward.
He became one of the senior corpsmen, responsible for the daily changing of dressings and training of younger corpsmen. To quote my brother "The experience changed my life forever".
After Great Lakes, he was transferred to a Navy Air Squadron out of Albany, Georgia.
He flew the RA5C Vigilante. It was a carrier-based photo-reconnaisance aircraft attached to the USS Forrestal (in the Mediterranean). While on the Forrestal, he was a flight deck corpsman, responsible for the emergency medical care of the flight deck crew.
After his tour on the Forrestal, he was transferred back to Albany, Georgia where he was the senior corpsman attached to the base hospital
in charge of two adult wards.
My brother was discharged in August, 1969.
The nickname he got in the serice of "Doc" has
stuck with him. We all call him "Doc" now.....
