Yates Research

Posted by Gerry Yates <gpenberthy@yahoo.com> on Tue, 19 Mar 2002, in response to Yates, posted by Rebecca Fell on Mon, 18 Mar 2002

Rebecca,
You are off to a good start already. Just by posting your query is a big start. I sugggest that when you do find the names of your grandparents you post them on all the genealogy web sites. There are quite a few and they are free to post surnames. Believe me they work. I was like you and had very little infomation on my fathers side. The only ones i had to ask questions to were my distant cousins. So I did and now I have been able to trace my family back to the 1700's. It's not easy and very time consuming so don't get discouraged. Try census, marriage, death, birth, land records, read everything you find. Sometimes clues will be hidden in an article of someone's family history. Hang in there, you're going to do great. My Yates were from Virginia, Kentucky, and Mo. If you do find a connection to these states let me know for I have some of the 1800 census for Lawrence, Carter Co. Kentucky and Reynolds Co. Mo. Good luck
