Re:wainfur

Posted by Gareth Nelson Wainfur <taffmantoo@yahoo.com> on Fri, 03 Dec 2004, in response to Wainfur or similar, posted by Helen Gardiner on Sat, 16 Oct 2004

I was born in Newport Gwent (formerly monmouthmouthshire) May 18th 1949 ,My father was Henry George As Wainfur ,but he told me that his real fathers name was hughes and was from abertillery and hughes had left his mother and taken up with this man called Wainfur who was from lincolnshire. My sister had some of the family tree traced and was told that the Wainfur family was the only family of that name in britain ...As far as I know the name Wainfur was derived from the olde englishe by combining wain (which meant wagon ..as in "The Hay Wain"..a painting by Constable) and fur which meant "maker" so Wainfur translated as wagonmaker...so I presumed they were wagonmakers in olden times ...I hope this has been of help to you.
