Contraband slave descendants

Posted by Kate Wiltrout <kate.wiltrout@pilotonline.com> on Wed, 17 Jun 2009

I am a newspaper reporter in Norfolk, Va., looking for people descended from the original "contraband" slaves who escaped to Fort Monroe in 1861 and were declared to be free by Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler.

His decision caused hundreds/thousands of other slaves to head for the fort, and a large "Contraband camp" grew in Hampton, Va.

I know the names of the first three contrabands: Frank James, Sheppard Mallory, and James Townsend. But I know there were many many others, and would love to hear from folks who can trace their ancestry back to contrabands.

Thanks!
