My mothers side of the family (Kacoyanis) was from Alatsata, my grandfather (mothers father) was a priest in Alatsata before immigrating to Boston, Massachusetts USA. I don't know the population of Alatsata back then, but it couldn't have been that great. I do remember my mother speaking of relatives who immigrated to Australia about the same time she came to the US around 1927.

  Does anyone know information about Alatsata during the period of the late 1800's to the 1920's? I'm trying to find out about a part of my Greek family that settled their temporarily. The name is PAVLIDAKIS.

    My family is also from Alatsata. Check my genealogy tree at http://hatzikyriakos.s5.com.
    There is a book you can buy to check for many greek surnames and families coming from Alatsata from 1800-1922 until the Asia Minor holocaust. The book title is "ALATSATA my lost homeland" by Fanis N. Kleanthis (ISBN 960-87159-0-3). I have read the book and it is excellent; also it was extremely helpful for my research since I am the webmaster of the website "Memories from Smyrna 1900-1922" (http://smyrnialbum.s5.com).
    The only problem you may face is to buy the book because is not available anymore in the bookstores; Nowdays, I think it is only distributed by the family Kleanthis in Athens.
    You can also contact Marianna Mastrostamati, BoD Chairman of Alatsata Club "Presentation of Virgin Mary", tel: 0030 210 7610 358. She is a great person and I am sure she will help you if she knows about you family.

      I recently received news of the late Con Masters (nee Mastrakoulis) of Melbourne. He was a relation of mine whose parents Dimitri & Anggela moved to Crete (Nea Alatsata) from Altsata, Asia Minor. I believe Con's brother was named Yiorgo. This could be your grandfather?
      My own grandparents were from Alatsata & immigrated to Australia. I knew some of their relatives settled in Crete. My grandmother's maiden name was Charouhas.
      Con Mastrakoulis's aunt Philia Polites was sister to my grandmother Argero Charouhas.
      I think there could be a link. I welcome your feedback & any questions.

        By accident I came across your message re Con Mastrakoulis. Con was married to my mother's sister, Maria Polites. I gave the eulogy at Con's funeral in Bendigo. I have my grandmother's name - my mother Helen married Speros Polites, hence the surame continued. Re your comment about George Mastrakoulis - as far as I know, George had 2 sons, and I don't think either have yet married.
        My grandmother's sister Argero Charouhas - your grandmother - married in Sydney, and there were 2 children, Basil and Koula. I take it you are Basil's son. I've worked out who you are, but would like to know who 'George Mastrakoulis' is. Did you get any more info from him? Keep me in the loop as I am always interested in family history.         Tony Chartres sent me a copy of Con's eulogy. I enjoyed reading this so much as it was informative & equally entertaining. It opened yet another avenue for me to explore. Unfortunately I have not heard anything back from 'George Mastrakoulis'. I thought linking 'Mastrakoulis' to 'Alatsata' was a connection that could yield something of interest. Having read the eulogy, it led me to the portal with which you have written me, so in effect it has done a full circle.
        On the family history I have found one resource, the National Archives Recordsearch (http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/recordsearch.aspx ) very helpful & have requested various documents to be made available on the Internet. One of my most recent requests was for the following Registration of your Grandmother Phylis (with photos too) , if you click the following link:

        I have requested quite a few of these files to be made available & there are currently documents relating to 'Charouha', "Voyagis' & 'Polites' although from what I can tell the latter probably extends beyond 'Theodore Polites' (Phylis's husband) who sponsored my grandmother's arrival to Australia in 1925.

        Hi Sophia, Your great grandmother and my grandmother were first cousins. My grandmother's maiden name was Dilboy and she lived in Somerville, MA -- Most of her closest relatives in Greece live outside of Heraklion, Crete in the village of Nea Forteza

        I have participated in the writing of a book titled `'Meta ta Alatsata – oi alatsatianoi ana ton kosmo ' in greek language. I personally took care of and wrote a chapter of this book titled George Dilboy. There are many of documents and pictures from his life and history. So, I know that his family had eight children but I only know four of them: Demetrios, George, Nickolas and Marianthe. Do you know the names of other four children?   Dear friends, my name is Kostis kalivas son of Athanasios Kalivas and Kalliopi Cafoussis, born in 1966 at Heraklion Crete Greece and still live there. Five years ago I started a fascinating and very motional journey trying to find out any clues about both my families (Kalivas and Cafoussis). Unfortunately for my father's family the informations are very little. For my mother's family I had more luck but still not enough for me...
  I'd appreciate If anybody could help me in this research. Both my grand parents John Cafoussis and Cyriacoula Macarona born at Alatsata, emigrated in U.S (01/06/1910 and 11/13/1914)and went to Fort worth Tx where they married and had two children. According to the 1920 U.S Census they still were in U.S. We suppose that in that year they returned at their homeland at Asia Minor. After 1922 they stayed until 1923 at Chios island and then they came to Crete where they lived till their death (1946 and 1972).They had 8 more children, now 6 living (among them my mum).If anybody has any piece of information about the period of their life at U.S. or after 1920 till 1922 at Alatsata I'd be obliged to know!!! we also look forward to hear from fellow - Alatsatians from all over the world.

  My name is George Lathouras, I was born in Canada ~ my father Nicholas George Lathouras was born in Tanta Egypt, lived in Greece most of his life (with many relatives still in Greece. Spent his summers as a youth on the island Leros.
  He now lives in Florida USA after working as a family doctor in both Ontario Canada and Texas USA.
  I have 2 sisters Daphne Lathouras, Arlington Virginia USA and Stephanie Lathouras, Arlington Texas.
  I don't have much of my family geneology although my sister Daphne may have more information.
  Our cousin Effie Lathouras (daughter of my father's brother Theodore - still residing in Athens) also lives in Virginia USA
  I would be interested to know if there is any family connection, given yours is the only other surname Lathouras II have encountered.
