Cork Dineen
Posted by Matthew Dineen <mgnat45@yahoo.com> on Sun, 08 Mar 2009, in response to Cork Dineen, posted by Tony Dineen on Sat, 07 Mar 2009
Dear Tony,Thanks for the post. Very interesting. I didn't know about the Brittany connection. I sort of assumed the name Dineen (also spelled in my family records as Dinneen and Deneen) is one of many variants, probably on a place name, such as an owner's estate, and now I see it may have been a city. Funny, I'm a bit of an antiquarian myself, but no poet.
My great-grandfather Dineen was born in "Lomanagh (Lamanagh?), in the district of Kilgarvan, near the border with Cork I understand. His father was a laborer, probably on a dairy. A family closely elated by marriage was the Reardons. He and his five siblings (Lawrence, Catherine, Denis, Patrick, and Julia) were reportedly orphaned and came under the care of a Protestant minister, who may have been the Rev. George McCutchan, also known as the "Home Rule Parson" for being a champion of Irish self-governance and for the poorer, usually Catholic, classes. They emigrated through Queenstown and entered the U.S. though Philadelphia, first Lawrence, then John, then the other four together, I'm guessing after the second parent died.
I know there are many other, unrelated Dineens, as I stayed at a farmhouse owned by some Dineens in 1982. I remember the son was an opera singer who sang to the cows, who gave more milk as a result. And, my uncle's wife married a completely unrelated Dineen (Pat Joe Dineen, an Irish immigrant). There are many here too, almost anywhere in the U.S. you go. There is a woman who's a federal judge, a former NY insurance commissioner. My brother was once temporarily denied a job because his first and last name (without middle initial) turned up in a background check as "possible carer criminal." Another man of same name, different middle initial, from same neighborhood!
After coming to the U.S., my great-grandfather married Bridget Creeden (or Creedon), daughter of Cornelius, "dairyman", which I guess means more than a laborer, from Glendar, Clondrohid (I think that's the parish), which also seems to be near the Cork/Kerry border. Her mother was descended from the Quills. I've discovered that here is a Michael Quill (transit worker organizer) memorial in Kilgarvan, where my great-grandpa grew up.
But we're all cousins at some point, if we go back to Eve.
Take care,
Matt Dineen
