Ballard Beckford Nembhard
Posted by Anne Powers <annepowers@dsl.pipex.com> on Thu, 27 Nov 2008, in response to Nembhard of Jamaica, posted by Elaine Nembhard on Sat, 06 Jan 2007
If you don't already know, there are references to Nembhards at the British National Archives website including one to Ballard Beckford Nembhard becoming a Council member for Jamaican in 1807. His Will is also available for download dated 1821 "Will of Ballard Beckford Nembhard of All Saints Southampton , Hampshire" the reference is PROB 11/1647. The main website is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ I believe relative religious tolerance in Jamaica led to the development of a significant Jewish community there from early colonial times, so the name may well be Jewish in origin. The Ballard and Beckford families were among the earliest English colonisers from the 1650's and significant planatation owners.Responses
