Hi Veronica,
I don't know anything about a surname CUDGER. hmm
The only thing I do know about Cudger COURTNEY is that info off his death certificate I ordered said he was born in Orangeburg Co, S.C. I went to rootsweb.com and the only COURTNEY I found info on was a young female living with a
white family, I think it was in 1880.
The story I was told about Cudger COURTNEY was that he had his mothers maiden name. His father was Seminole Indian from Florida. His father came through or was working in S.C.
and met his mother and then left to go back to Florida.
I was told Cudger COURTNEY did know his father and went and stayed with him in the very early 1900's. I don't have a clue at all what Cudger's fathers name was at all.
Since I never knew about a surname CUDGER that does give me something to think about. I had never even heard of the first name Cudger before so I never thought about it that way. With other names I know sometimes the first name is a maiden name of the female. Was your CUDGER line in S.C. at all? And if so where were they? I found Cudger COURTNEY
on the 1900 Census in Barnwell Co, S.C. living with his grandfather Isaac COURTNEY, I don't know who Cudger's mother name is. And I found Isaac COURTNEY on the 1880 Census same County. That's as far as I've got. (see below)
If down the line you see anything on a COURTNEY who married a CUDGER please let me know. I've been looking everywhere trying to find them.

I know that you wrote this message a while ago, but this might still be helpful. I believe Cudger is a variation on Cudjo (or Cudjoe, Cudgo, Cudgoe, Cudjoe, etc). I have seen all the different spellings on different censuses for the same people. There were several Cudjo families that were Seminole and that came from Florida and settled in Oklahoma. You should be able to find out quiet a lot about them from the different census, but also look into the Dawes Commission (commission to the five civilized tribes). This gives you lots of information about the families. I hope that helps. Hanna
