The Last Slave Ship - Mobile Alabama

Posted by Dennis Vickery <dennisvickery1@aol.com> on Mon, 27 Jun 2005, in response to SLAVE SHIP " CLOTHILDE " IN MOBILE,ALABAMA -1859, posted by muhammad abdullah on Tue, 22 Feb 2005

I also have been interested in this subject. My understanding is that since the auctioning of slaves had become outlawed the african people on the ship were simply turned loose and had to somehow survive on their own with absolutely no assistance from anyone. As I understand it, many or all of them settled in an area of southeast Mobile near the bay that became known as "Africatown", and that many of their descendants still live in this area.

I would be very interested to know if any formal history of this event has been done. I think it is a remarkable instance of the resourcefullness of human beings in the face of unspeakable adversity.
