Austin Steward, Rochester, NY pioneer; project of Rochester/Monroe County Freedo Trail Commission
Posted by David A. Anderson <sankofadaa@earthlink.net> on Sat, 14 May 2005
Thank you for your posting; updates are needed: a) the Austin Steward Memorial is housed in the Clarion Hotel, 120 E. Main St., Rochester; b) Steward was THE featured speaker at the FIRST New York State Emancipation celebration, July 5, 1827.Also, I seek clarification re. "(The celebration was held again twenty-seven years later for a single time, and Steward . . . was given a seat of honor on the stage with Frederick Douglass, Henry Highland Garnet and Lucretia Mott.)" Since I don't find any record of it here, I'd like to know where it took place?
I know when and where he went after leaving Rochester, and I know where he, his wife and two children are buried. Rochester-Monroe County Freedom Trail Commission, which I chair, is seeking a link to any Steward relatives that may have survived him.
