Alkebulan

In Dr. Yosef Ben Jochannan's work, "Black Man of the Nile and his Family," on page 47 he states the following:"Among the many names Alkebu-lan ["mother of mankind" or "garden of eden"] was called are the following: "Ethiopia, Corphye, Ortegia, Libya and Africa - the latest of all. Alkebulan is the oldest and the only one of indigenous origin. It was used by the Moors, Nubians, Numidians, Khart-Haddans (Carthagenians), and Ethiopians. Africa, the current misnomer adopted by almost everyone today , was given to this continent by the ancient Greeks and Romans."
He doesn't give any primary sources for his information and I wish that he did. But from the looks of it, it was probably an Arabic word that was adopted by the African Moors for the North East region of what is now Afrika. It was never used for the whole continent. Just the Nile Valley region and parts around the Sahara.
I do not think there was a general name for all of Afrika. If so, it was more than likely a late designation. Ta-Merri didn't have a name until the 11th dynasty. Before then it was simply called "Hnu" or the "interior" because it was then a colony of Ethiopia or Ta-Nehesi.
