Col. John Hughes Winston

How would I find out the names of the two slaves mentioned.
I've sent this email to the college holding this info. Does anyone else have and suggestions how I might obtain futher info of the John H. Winston slave names?

Letters to and from various members of a North Carolina family concerning settlement of estate, governmental positions, sums of money, and family information. Bill of sale for two slaves. Letter from Francis Marion Cockrell to John H. Winston, Clay County, MO, concerning possibilities of renomination for the U.S. Senate.

My g-grandfather (first name, Reuben) mentions in a 1941 newspaper article, the sale of him and his father, sold south at the beginning of the Civil War. He was born in Platte County (formed of Clay Co.) The price of both was $2800.00. His father made whiskey, which he also became adept at making at the age of ten. They both were sold south to make whiskey for the confederate soldiers. I believe the Cockrell and Winston names are connected as possible owners.

How do I precede in checking out the above lead?
