Marzett/Marzette
Posted by Djenaba Marzett <lilmissdottie@yahoo.com> on Fri, 19 Mar 2004, in response to Marzette Family, posted by Veronica Marzette Johnson on Fri, 25 Apr 2003
Hi y'all! I live in Detroit, MI. My father, Andrew Marzett (1949-55yrs old), was born in Meridian, Mississippi. I believe my grandfather's name was Robert Marzett. I was told that he was killed when my father was very young, supposedly by getting his head chopped off with an ax. My grandmother (Rosie, maiden name Kirkland) relocated all of her children here to Michigan in the 60s. Their first baby boy died before he was one yrs old I believe, then my aunt Gladys was born (she's in her early 70s),Robert (I'm assuming because I call him Uncle Bob!),Leo, my dad Andrew, and finally Burl.
There are alot of Marzettes here and an interesting story. Some of them lived in my school district, and since elementary school, teachers and administrators used to ask if we (me & my brother) were related to Carlos Marzette. We got asked that all the way through high school because they must have been trouble makers. I never met them but I knew that Carlos nor his other siblings were related to us. Plus, people used to ask since it is an unusual name for a black family. THEN, since I was a little girl, there was a family myth that part of the family changed the last name by either adding or dropping the letter "e". My immediate family (mom, dad, brother and I) are the only ones that don't have the "e" on the end. My 1st cousins all have the "e". The reason was given as back in the day some gangster or mobster had the same last name and that our family used to receive serious threats because apparently they thought that we were all related. Fast forward to 1994:my first name is always a conversation piece and at a graduation party, one of my friend's guests asked me my last name. She (older than me, probably in her 40s-50s now)was shocked because it was her family's name too. I told her the mobster story and she said that it was true and the gangster/mobster guy was her uncle. I can't remember anything else, but his name may have been Henry. Or is that name sticking out because I read the other thread, sorry, don't mean to offend. I am so interested in my family's geneology and I said one day, we probably will find out that we're all related! Marzett(e) is a strong name and it has always, always meant alot to me. Love, Dot
