From one of us:

Each month, I would like to publish a short article coming from one of YOU, in English or in French! It will be up to you to chose the subject, as long as it remains "genealogically correct".

"A Puzzle Finally Solved"

Eighteen years ago I started work on my Doe Surname. My father was still alive & really interested in this search. I read the Local Census, The Detroit Census & Port Huron, MI Census. All said they were born in Fr. Canada. I then started on Vital Records & really got nowhere.

I followed a New England Doe Family who had some members go to Montreal, but nothing fit. None of the right names & the Ancestor of this Family was a Nicholas Doe from England. My Father passed away & I abandoned this search. My Health wasn't good & I decided it was too hard!!

My youngest Brother who had the same name as my Father & Grandfather had several Heart Attacks & a 5-Way Bypass. He had Diabetes & on a Large dose of Insulin 3 times a day. So I started again. We now had a LDS Family History Center here. I found out I could order Detroit City Directories. They were in Detroit in the 1870 & 1880 Census & in Port Huron in 1860. I started with the 1865 Directory, not there yet. I ordered the 1866-1867 Directory & there was a Jessie Doe, which he had called himself in all 3 Censuses. In the 1868 Directory, there was a Jacinty Doe, In the 1869 Census a Hyacinthe DAOUST, In 1870 a Jessie Doe--All at the same address each time. This was where he lived in the 1870 & 1880 Census.

I then found my G. Grandfather Peter's Death Certificate. It gave his parents as-Jessie Doe & Emelie Lalonde & said he was born in Fr. Canada. I ordered the Loiselle Marriage Index for Daoust. Behold, There was a Marriage for Hyacinthe Daoust & Emelie Lalonde in St. Polycarpe in 1834. I then ordered the Church Records for St. Polycarpe. All the children were baptised in the right order & right names. I then got their marriages in Detroit St. Anne's Church--Parents were Hyacinthe Daoust & Emelie Lalonde. Thanks to Al Trudeau of the French Habitant Society who did my St. Anne's Church Records which are in the Burton Collection.

From then on, it was just going backwards with Church Records to verify each step & Generation. I was then back to France. My Brother was very happy & so was I. He was a Joseph William Doe, His Father & grandfather were also & he has a Son-Joseph William Doe.

Our puzzle was solved!! We WERE DAOUSTS.

Darlene
