13-14 July 2002 – Homecoming, Powell, Knox County, TN

coffmancousins@hotmail.com

Decendants of Pioneer Settlers of East Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia will gather on 13-14 July at Bell’s Campbround at Powell, Knox County., TN. Powell is a suburb of Knoxville and is located in North Knox County. Bell's Campground is off of Clinton Hwy. Those needing hotel/motel accommodations will need to make them in North Knoxville.

The Official Group Motel for "The East Tennessee Homecoming/Reunion" is The Sleep Inn in north Knoxville at 5460 Central Ave. Pike, phone 1-865-688-7300. If you people will give us a month to take head count on ones wanting motels, Terri lives in Knoxville and she will get us all good rates. Last year it was near $40 for a two full size doubles with discount. You must call to make reservations as they need credit card info. The campground is about. Four miles away on Clinton Highway from motel at Powell.

For those of you using RVs we have a park close by: The Escapees Raccoon Valley RV Park,  908 Raccoon Valley Rd. NE, Heiskell, TN 37754-2121, telephone 865.947.9776.  This facility has about 70 RV sites, they have both 50 and 30 amp service and pull through for longer units.  Not shaded though.  Full hookup w/cable is $19.49 and that also includes tax.  It is about 2/3 the way in towards Heiskell on Raccoon Road from Hwy 75.

This is an open invitation to attend the 2nd annual homecoming/reunion of our pioneer families that settled, lived, raised their children, and sometimes died in this area. Some sank deep roots and others moved on, scattering our ancestors from coast to coast. Our purpose is to have fun, get acquainted, and swap genealogical information. ALL surnames are welcome to attend. There will be a wealth of information to share. Plan on attending please! We Do Need A Head Count though as to NOT overbook the park. We would love to have volunteers for some of the surnames on the list to act as co-hosts/co-hostesses to greet and help people with their surname, to be made to feel welcome and to help them meet researchers working on the same surnames.

We know that we have some college instructors attending who perhaps can be persuaded to speak about history/genealogy. We also have experts and accredited genealogist who have been researching for 30 plus years. They are ready to share their information with us.

Attendance is FREE . . . but we will have a "donation" jar to offset the cost for using the campground, tableware, entertainment, and clean up.

Plan to attend and bring:

1. First and foremost yourselves...

2. Books, Bibles,  pictures, Family Group Sheets and other information,

3. A covered dish to share. (For those who are traveling some distance and for whom this is not a feasible option, you may either bring a sack lunch or a non-perishable or deli item that can be picked up at last minute locally.

4. Drinks, ice chest

5. A chair or blanket to sit on...If you are serving as a host or hostess, you will also need a small table (card table size or larger) to display your family information on.

Last year was our first attempt to pull all these early settlers' descendants together. As far as we knew, it had never been attempted before. It was a resounding success for a first attempt, and it was agreed that it should become an annual event. This area is so very rich in history, both as an Indian frontier and as an isolated jewel of Union sympathy during the Civil War. It also served as a departure point for westward movement and new settlement. Our ancestors left us a rich heritage, which we are striving to preserve and pass on to our children and grandchildren. This rich tapestry of ideals and values is what made us a great nation and what made each of us what we are today. And it began with our earliest immigrant ancestors who came here to start a new life and a new country.

and co-hosted by many more friends and cousins, both locally and via Internet -- too numerous to name individually, but all of whom we thank for all their help.

31 July – 4 Aug. 2002 – Boone Society Reunion, Wilsonville, OR

GFJay@aol.com

Westward Ho the Wagons! Move 'em out! It's "Oregon or Bust"! That was the slogan 158 years ago as pioneers loaded their wagons for the trek west, and now The Boone Society, Inc. is planning it's fourth biennial Boone Family Reunion for the Beaver State 31 July - 4 Aug. 4, 2002. Join us on the Oregon Trail as we celebrate the achievements of noted Boone descendants, tour some of the spectacularly beautiful sites and engage in traditional Society genealogical information sharing. Specific programs will be decided in the coming months.  The reunion in Wilsonville, OR (near Portland). Planned activities include:

Wednesday, 31 July: Registration and check in. Evening barbecue and entertainment at Boone's Ferry Park.

Thursday, 2 Aug.: Dr. Jim Tompkins, Oregon History Instructor at Clackamas Community College, will be our tour guide for a bus trip on the Columbia River Gorge portion of the Oregon Trail. We will stop at Multnomah Falls, around Mt. Hood, and will have lunch at Timberline Lodge at the base of the mountain. We will then travel west down Laurel Hill where wagons, oxen, horses and emigrants were lowered by rope. Prior to 1846, travel to the Willamette Valley was by the Columbia River, a treacherous and dangerous route. Some of Jim Tompkins' ancestors came this way.

After dinner, there will be an evening program at which we will be honored by the presence of William Cannon, the only Revolutionary War soldier buried in Oregon. William is portrayed by Tom Laidlaw  (actor, writer, historian and master storyteller) who holds a BS Degree in Theater Arts from Portland State University. Tom has been a volunteer blacksmith and interpreter at Ft.

Vancouver, WA for five years.

Friday, 2 Aug,: A day trip to the Oregon Coast (Boone Island and Boone Point, etc.) where Daniel's great grandson, George Luther Boone (the great grandfather of two of the Reunion Committee members), settled on Yaquina Bay after coming to Oregon in 1848. The return route will be via one of the Boone Homesteads, Salem (the state capitol) and several Boone Historical markers.

After dinner, Rochelle Cochran will present a program for historian Ken Kamper detailing his work with the Daniel Boone and Frontier Families Association, the many Boone sites in Missouri and efforts to protect and preserve Boone history and locations.

Saturday, 3 Aug.: A Morning tour of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Oregon City. The Boone Society Annual Meeting will be held after lunch. The Reunion Banquet and special entertainment will be In the evening.
