Mid Atlantic News

Attendance is up in many of the states forums. Thank you all for doing such a good job.

Pennsylvania SIG will host Kevin Frye on 18 May in the Root Cellar at 10-12 pm.

Kevin is a very knowledged person working with Andersonville Prison Records. He has a web site and does free look ups for those whom ask. Please join us for an interesting evening of fun and learning.

Mid Atlantic SIG will have as a speaker, the knowledged HOST GFS Peggy of the DAR, on 22 May 10-12 pm Golden Gates room. She has done this in the past for the NJ, NY, and PA SIG's. We hope to see you there with name, state, and when if known, to help Peggy find the data you are looking for. This is open to all who wish to attend.

Other speakers will be coming on to talk of various subjects as the year progresses.

Remember to use the front door: Keyword: Roots to read the highlighted events for each day. The front page has a feature button that highlights various activities in the forum.

Also remember to use the message boards to post and contact kin. Someone recently, in the Pennsylvania SIG found a relative off a post that was 3 years old.

FORT MILES, DE

While my subject here isn't so much about genealogy, it is part of the history of Delaware and perhaps some of you had ancestors stationed at Ft. Miles during WWII. In 1938, an area known as "The Cape Henlopen Lighthouse Reservation," after being turned over to the War Department became known as Ft. Miles. The fort was a "defensive military fort." It was located at the mouth of the Delaware Bay to keep Germany, our enemy at the time, from storming our beaches as we had done at Normandy. Up the Delaware River were all kinds of industries, oil refineries and the Philadelphia Naval Base, all critical to the war effort.

If you've ever been to the beaches in Delaware, you no doubt noticed round concrete towers and probably wondered what they were. There were 11 of those towers build between Cape Henlopen and Fenwick Island. They range from 40 feet to 90 feet high and are 17 feet in diameter, with one foot thick walls. The German boats were watched very carefully from those towers. They would have liked nothing better that to destroy any trade of shipments of supplies to our Allies. The towers were used to locate ships and to direct firing of guns should there be an attack.

In 1986, one of the towers at Cape Henlopen was restored and remodeled and is now the Pilot Radar Tower. It's hight teck equipment helps track ships and it's radios monitor incoming and outgoing traffic on the river.

All but one of the towers are closed to the public. The one that is open is also located at Cape Henlopen Start Park. You can climb to the top and enjoy a spectacular view.

Latest news from NARA (National Archives):

The 1930 Federal census will be released April, 2002, but meanwhile NARA has many City Directories available. The NARA site says that they are 1930 directories, but I did see many from 1920s through the 1930s. Some of them were for 1935. To see the New Jersey ones, go to: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/citydirs.html/

You can check out other states while you are there. NARA does mention that these are only available at their Regional Archives. You can get the list of the NARA branches at the site. These directories will not be sold at this time.

There is a genie who has to work nights while the NJ SIG is being held, so I told her that I would publish her names and her query. If someone finds that they cannot attend the SIG, I will occasionally put their names in this Newsletter.

From: My Roots 1@aol.com:

Searching for information on my 2nd Great-Grandfather, John Horton Warner. According to a fellow researcher he was born in New Jersey, but my own look at the 1900 census it looks like New York to me. Also says his Father was born in Connecticut and his Mother in Massachusetts. I have no idea what their names were, or that of any siblings.

John was born January 1824. He married Melinda Cronk probably about 1846 and reportedly in Burlingham, Ulster, NY - although I've not seen proof of that. Their children were;

Emily bn 1847

John D. bn 1849

Jane Le bn 1851 (my Great-grandmother)

Charles A bn 1853

Mary Elizabth bn 1857

Hiram Hasbrook bn 1860

Marcus B. bn 1863

I found John & Melinda on the 1900 census living with their daughter Emily and her husband Moses Fredenberg in Hudson Township, Douglas County, MN.

Does anyone recognize any of these names?

New York Sig.  Hosted by Host GFS CarlaD and Host GFS Susi.  9pm (est) in the Root Cellar.

I would like to recommend some great books for you to take a look at. If your interested in Diary's and Civil War an excellent book to read is Diary of a Yankee Engineer: The Civil War Story of John H. Westervelt, Engineer, 1st NY Volunteer Engineer Corps.  Edited by Anita Palladino The cost is $27.00.

Many diary's have hit the libraries and book stores. Some were discovered in attics, or rescued by descendents. Many hardly merit us to even pick them up.  But, that is not the case with Diary of a Yankee Engineer. Anita Palladino describes him as a  "an ordinary man in an extraordinary time," John Westervelt accomplished what few wartime diarists did - he has written an informative journal.

He wrote the diary intending it for his son only.

What raises this diary above the others is his first hand knowledge of life the way it was then.

What he was feeling about his environment, whether it was the climate, the horrible insects or the people around him in his regiment and the people who lived in that area both black and white.

I highly recommend this book you will enjoy it!

Some great sites to check out for NY:

Pennsylvania by HOST GFS Susi/HOST GFS Maria /HOST GFS SHELL/HOST GFS Jayne

Pennsylvania, a very important state in the development of the country. The development of the counties play a major role in your finding kin while researching files.

It is wise to know that land was purchased from the Indians starting in 1682, 1683 SIX DEEDS, 1684-1701, 1718-1720-1726 SUSQUEHANNA/DELAWARE INDIANS, 1732, 1736 FIVE INDIAN NATIONS, 1737 WALKING PURCHASE, 1749 NINE INDIAN NATIONS, 1754-58 TREATY OF ALBANY, 1768 NEW PURCHASE, 1784-1785 LAST PURCHASE.

The first area being developed was Chester County 1640, the Philadelphia County 1650 then Bucks 1680 for settlement and development. These Counties were all established in 1682.

Lancaster County 1729, was next, shrinking Chester County by a large amount. It was 20 years before more changes took place.

Bucks County covered Northampton, Lehigh and all of Bucks area of today in 1729.

Philadelphia County covered Berks, Montgomery County and Philiadelphia County in 1729.

Chester that had covered all of York, Lancaster, Delaware, Berks and Chester County in 1729.

Lancaster County in 1729 took ground from Chester County. Lancaster County in 1729 covered Franklin, Adams, Cumberland, lower Dauphin, Lebanon, York, much of Berks County and Lancaster County.

This representing the southeast region of the state of Pennsylvania.

The area surrounding this to the north can trace back to Bucks County over and including to Lycoming the farthest west, in a line down to Bucks Montgomery line as a border to Philadelphia County.

The area to the west is traceable back to Lancaster County all the way to the Ohio, West Virginia border of today. The northwest portion was not claimed until 1785.

Remembering that Maryland claimed land northward through the and to the tops of the southern counties of Pennsylvania from east of Fayette County until New Jersey.

Though there were no counties here yet and when formed many filed data in Maryland verses Pennsylvania. The land laws and grants and taxes were very different.

Recalling that the development of the Northwest Territory for the trappers and hunters in Virginia, they claimed all the southwest region of the state of Pennsylvania, Ohio,

Kentucky and westward to the Mississippi River. They also had different land and tax laws than Pennsylvania. The Virginians would not have left Virginia for Pennsylvania because the taxes were much higher and the laws very different than in their state.

Many fought and argued to retain this region for Virginia. I find the last land transaction taking place in 1805 to Virginia. The division was made in 1782. Part 1

Virginia/West Virginia by HOST GFS WILLM and HOST GFS Beri and HOST GFS BEAR

Virginia had arrive on it's shores in 1607, a ship representing the London Company. This name was later changed to the Virginia Company. Jamestown was developed. In 1609, Jamestown had approximately 500 people, in 1610 loss of life brought the population down to 60. Ships arrived, families came and Va. grew.

Virginia in 1634, created eight shires (counties) and ultimately ended up with 172 counties. Virginia then lost counties by 1950, the release of West Virgina in1863 (50) to form it's own state, the extinction of 13 counties absorbed by others, Kentucky claiming 9.

Birth records were required to be filed with the local commissioners of revenue.

This started in 1853 to 1896. It was not reinforced early on, many records are also lost due to Civil War fires. Birth records were kept again starting in 1912.

Various counties and cities though kept good records.
