Industry-wide Challenge to Radio Internet Streaming

ANNOUNCEMENT:

An Industry-wide Challenge to Broadcasting Music & Advertising Through Internet Streaming Affects Radio Broadcasters in the US

DearREADERS,
Before agreeding to broadcast The SEEKER & DearMYRTLE weeknightly, we were aware that the US Copyright Office is working to determine how to best regulate the internet streaming of radio broadcasts. However, an unanticipated directive issued January 9, 2002 brought some big challenges. Radio stations are scrambling to understand what to do next.

Clear channel stations such as WHNZ have elected to broadcast with dead air. From , we read:"Dead Air: You may experience brief periods of silence while you're listening live. This is intentional because we're not allowed to play local commercials. There's too much legal stuff to put down here, just know that this is normal and the stream isn't broken."

The WTMY station group has chosen to discontinue internet streaming until this matter is resolved. I tend to agree with this decision, because 6 minutes of local advertising on the radio translates to 6 minutes of silence for internet listeners. This would be a confusing situation at best when attempting to tune into our Sarasota station's web streaming.

A third alternative would be to utilize streaming software that would only allow 20 internet listeners at a time -- definitely not a viable option.

The value of The SEEKER & DearMYRTLE's radio show is in our ability to reach folks throughout the country, indeed throughout the world via internet streaming. Limiting our broadcast to the greater Sarasota area does not meet the goals we have in mind for the show.

We appreciate the support and enthusiasm from listeners, and that fact that virtually every person invited to appear as a guest replied affirmatively. (OK, one was to be out of the country on a trip to Bali, but her appearance was rescheduled!)

Regretfully, we have made the decision to table the radio broadcast until further notice.
