Name Change

Submitted by: gkwatts@aol.com

I did not start searching until way after my father had passed away. My father was an only child. His mother and father came from Sweden. My last name is spelled Watts. So was my father's, however, my great grandfather's was Watz - until they came to the US. That is were it was changed. That made the search difficult. I found out that not only was it spelled Watz, but within the same family some of them spelt it Vatz. Going back further I find out that the Watz/Vatz was a name that was given to my 5th generation back grandfather, whose original name was (get this) Nyman. The reason it was changed was that he was in the Swedish Military and that was the name they had given him.
