Announcing a NEW SIG

"Dear Diary"

Please join HOST GFS Sam and HOST GFS Lee every Thurdsay at 8PM ET in Golden Gates, for their new fun SIG, "Dear Diary."

Everyone is recording names, dates & places into their genealogy databases. But everyone needs help with the awesome task of writing down our the history of our very own families (including our parents, grandparents, great grandparents - folks we knew or may have known personally.)

"Dear Diary" will help you jog your memory, motivate you into getting your family history started, and make the task FUN.

Do you know the name of your grandmother's favorite song? Do you know the lyrics? Have you written any of this down yet? What's in your dad's 78 collection? What about your own 45 collection? What was the first dance you learned and who taught you? What dirty songs did you learn in college? Can you remember the words to all the songs you sang at camp or in Scouts?

Do you remember having the measles, chicken pox, mumps, getting your tonsils out, getting shots from the doctor? Ever pretend to be sick to get out of going to school? Ever break your arm or leg? What home remedies were used on you?

What fashions have you survived, loved or hated? Bell-bottoms, girdles, teased hair, crewcuts, pierced ears? What fads did you parents or grandparents endure?

What talents do members of your family have? Musician, math whiz, expert cook? Can someone wiggle their ears, do Donald Duck impersonations, or blow smoke rings?

What letters or diaries do you have in your possession? Have you transcribed them (onto your computer)? Have you kept birthday cards, Christmas cards, graduation announcements? Do you have any letters you wrote as a child?

What did you and your siblings fight about? What is your first childhood memory? What have your parents told you about their childhoods?

Where has your family lived? If they moved, how often, and how did they get there? What's your favorite family vacation.

What's the best meal you've ever had? What was it and where did you eat it? What's the worst meal?

We'll cover all this and more. We plan to devote each SIG to a different topic, and end each session with an easy exercise or assignment that will take little time to do but will get you started. After attending 4-5 of our SIGS, why, you'll be well on your way to recording your family history! And you'll have fun doing it!! Afterall, this is the meat of genealogy - all the things you wish you knew about your distant ancestors. (And we'll help you with their social history, too!)

Your ideas are most welcome, as are Guest Speakers. We look forward to seeing you at "Dear Diary!"
