9 May 2003 - History Forum, North Andover, MA

The Sixth Annual Community Forum on Historical Records, Celebrating History: Anniversaries to Educate, Promote and Preserve History will be held on 9 May 2003 at Merrimack College in North Andover, MA.

Organized by Secretary of the Commonwealth, William Francis Galvin, the Massachusetts Historical Records Advisory Board and the Essex National Heritage Commission, the forum will bring together archivists, historians, librarians, educators, scholars, genealogists and other interested parties from public, private, and nonprofit organizations.

Keynote speaker, Bill Jackson, senior archivist of the Harley-Davidson Motor
Co., will share his experience and the role of archives in the planning and development of this year's centennial anniversary celebration of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. The forum will offer a full day of speakers and sessions to examine the practical ways historical records and archival materials can be utilized in the celebration of histories, anniversaries and commemorative activities.

"Celebrating History: Anniversaries to Educate, Promote and Preserve History" will build upon the success of the previous forums: Advocating Massachusetts History (1998), Building Alliances (1999), Documenting Our Heritage (2000), Telling Our Stories (2001), and Documenting Underdocumented Populations & Communities (2002).

Additional information will be available on the MHRAB homepage at

28-31 May 2003 - NGS Luncheons, Pittsburgh, PA

It has come to my attention that the National Genealogical Society website for the upcoming conference in Pittsburgh May 28-31 does not show which luncheons are being sponsored by which society or organization. If you are a member of NGS you would have received a preliminary registration announcement with your last newsmagazine showing this information, but not the menus served each day.

Since many of us sign up for lunches sponsored by the groups to which we belong (not saying you have to be a member as it is a nice way to meet with others of the same interests), I have listed the luncheons below along with the menus. (You may notice an ethnic theme in the food. Pittsburgh has many cultures which still retain an identity in the area.) To see the luncheon
speaker and title of their presentation go to

7-10 Aug. 2003 - Highland Games, Eldon, Prince Edward Island

From 7 through 10 Aug. 2003, the Belfast Historical Society, in conjunction with the Caledonain Club, will host the 200th Anniversary and the Annual Highland Games at the Lord Selkirk Provincial Park in Eldon, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Over this four day extended weekend, planned activities include: genealogy workshops and lectures, displays and exhibits, concerts, traditional highland athletic competitions, piping competitions, reenactments of the Selkirk Settlers arrival, highland dance competitions, guest speakers and kilted classic golf tournaments.

This is a part of a year-long celebration of the Selkirk Settlers arrival on Prince Edward Island.

For additional information go to
http://www.islandregister.com/skye/skye2003.html , or write to Linda Jean Nicholson MacKenzie, Event Coordinator, Belfast Historical Society, RR1, Belfast, PE C0A 1A0, Canada or call 902-659-2209.

This year marks the 200th Anniversary of the arrival of the Selkirk Settlers to the community of Belfast on Prince Edward Island. The "Selkirk Settlers" were a group of Scottish colonists brought to Prince Edward Island in 1803 by Thomas Douglas, the 5th Earl of Selkirk.

These Highland men and women sailed on three ships: the Polly, the Dykes, and the Oughton. The Polly arrived on 7 August, the Dykes (on which Lord Selkirk traveled) disembarked on 9 August, and the Oughton arrived on the 27th.

About 400 of the approximate 800 colonists brought by Lord Selkirk settled in the Belfast area. Most of these settlers had been passengers on the ship Polly.

15-24 Sept. 2003 - Owsley English Heritage Tour

Owsley Family Historical Society: English Heritage Tour will be 15-14 Sept. 2003. Plans are now complete for the tour to England and North Wales. We are going to a more northerly part of the country to see an entirely different group of sites than the 2001 tour, with three exceptions. We will once again visit Glooston church and village and Acton Court and church. One other difference this time is the visit to North Wales historic Caernarvon Castle built by Edward I.

You do not have to be a Society member to attend. For information, please contact Bill Gann at wgann6@comcast.net or visit the Web site:
