North Carolina Court Records
Pre - 1868: County Courts handled civil suits, estate settlements, land entries, military pension declarations, criminal cases, and a variety of other legal matters.
1806 - 1868: Equity Courts had jurisdiction over civil matters. Most cases related to probate and land matters, and generally listed heirs. Equity Courts were abolished in 1868.
1806 - present: Superior Courts were established in each county in 1806 and shared jurisdiction with the County Court. Superior Courts handled more serious matters that required a greater knowledge of law. In 1868 these courts replaced the County Courts.
