About The Society

The Beginning

In 1993, east coast researchers Al Sosa, Jorge Camunas, Charles Fourquet and Vivian Deliz met on-line and began what is now "The Hispanic Genealogical Society Of New York".

The group began helping each other research their Puerto Rican roots on Compuserve's Genealogy Forum. With time, a Latin American section was created where the group was able to expand their knowledge, create a Hispanic reference library and collect genealogical resources from all over Latin America. Membership continued to grow as on-line conferencing and networking between members from many Latin American countries and Spain enabled the group to be diversified. Further exposure to the groups purpose helped to make it the largest Hispanic genealogical group on-line. Jorge, Chaz, and Al then joined other on-line services, reaching out to other Hispanics with interest in genealogy, sharing their expertise and helping to pave the way for Hispanic research on-line.

Now, the group reaches outside the world of Cyberspace, making available the same research opportunities to all Hispanics interested in finding their roots.

The Society

The Hispanic Genealogical Society Of New York is a FREE OF CHARGE, non-profit, public service and educational organization. HGSNY is headquartered in New York City, where the base of our volunteer staff organizes meetings, plan projects, provide instructional forums and host seminars. The society will have a library and research center in the borough of Manhattan, where collected reference publications and research materials will be housed. Members of our volunteer staff will be available to field questions and assist beginners in thier quest to search thier family's history.

The members of HGSNY are truly diversified. We have Historians, Students, Writers, Hobbyists, Homemakers, Retirees, Doctors, and Computer Professionals who research Latin America, Mexico, South America, Spain and other Spanish heritage countries. All Hispanos joined together by the desire to find our roots in Spain, assist others in finding theirs and by the longing to spread the knowledge of our Hispanic culture and heritage all over the world.

Our Friends

HGSNY is currently working together with several Hispanic genealogical and cultural organizations to create a network of contacts for Hispanic research. This joint effort will open channels of communications between the organizations providing members of all groups access to a wider range of resources. An international association that will offer research opportunities to those who want to recapture their culture and help find their own unique historical past.

Our Vision Statement

There is a growing need in our culture for self-awareness, self-recognition and empowerment. As Hispanics quickly grow into the largest minority group in this country, we are faced with new responsibilities as a culture to ourselves and to those who come after us. As members of any Hispanic organization, we must be committed to helping each other grow and fostering pride and self-esteem in our children so they can continue to carry the torch. We can do this by choosing vehicles of encouragement which help raise pride in the individual.

Genealogy is the study of one's family history, including tracing lineages and recording ancestral data. It is one vehicle which provides a sense of belonging and pride. Knowing that we are part of a rich and unique history fosters a new appreciation.

The Hispanic Genealogical Society of New York contributes to this commitment by providing the knowledge of where we come from on a historical as well as a genealogical level. This commitment has been translated into our vision statement. Our main objectives are:

To encourage Hispanics to research their roots, history and rich heritage,



To provide instruction and assistance in genealogical research,



To locate and make available genealogical resources for research,



To protect and restore historical documents relating to Hispanics and our history,



To establish a network of Hispanic genealogical libraries and other resources,



To begin the organization of a National Hispanic Genealogical Association,



To encourage Hispanics to spread information about our history and culture,



To lobby for Hispanic collections in libraries.
