Demographic Registrars - Puerto Rico

The following is a list of the demographic registrars on the island of Puerto Rico. To the best of my knowledge, it is complete. The vital records are in Spanish. Additions and corrections may be emailed to GFSBrenda@aol.com (En inglés por favor).

I. General information about Puerto Rican vital records

A.

Vital records (birth, marriage, death certificates, etc.) were not officially sanctioned by the government of Puerto Rico until 1885. Therefore, such records before that year are not generally available from federal sources on the island.

B.

Instructions

1. The demographic registrars in Puerto Rico are official repositories of vital records and summaries since 1885. Each of the island's 87 registrars is full of volumes of copies of birth, baptism, marriage and death records collected from their respective municipalities. A complete list of the registrars on the island follows in section II.B. of this outline.

2. To obtain certified abstracts of vital records, send your request (preferably in Spanish), a copy of your photo ID, and either a $2 Internal Revenue stamp or a $2 money order payable to the Secretary of the Treasury for each record requested to the registrar. The stamps are usually available through the local hospital or town hall of the municipality you're researching. They're also available via the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Genealogical Society at 25 Ralph Ave., Brentwood, NY 11717-2424. You can also e-mail the society's Vice-President Phil Ramos (LatinoBlue@aol.com) for more details. Don't forget to include a pre-addressed and stamped return envelope. Allow several weeks for delivery.

A.

The main Puerto Rican Demographic Registrar in San Juan has records from the entire island since 22 July 1931. For records preceding this date, send your request as instructed above to the registrar in the municipality where the event occurred.
