Georgia Courthouses Destroyed by Cyclones, Floods, Tornadoes & Storms

Destruction of some county courthouse records in 66 of Georgia's 159 counties. With a few exceptions, this survey does not imply all records were lost at the time of destruction of the courthouse. Human frailties contributed in the loss of many records also.

Baker CountyFlood - 1925, 1929.
Baldwin CountyFire - 1861.
Bartow CountyOriginally Cass County. Courthouse destroyed by enemy fire during War Between the States in the 1860's.
Bulloch CountyFire - 1864.
Burke CountyFire - 1825, 1856.
Calhoun CountyFire - 1888, 1920.
Carroll CountyFire - 1927.
Charlton CountyCounty site then at Traders Hill. Destroyed by fire in 1877. Present site fire 19 February 1928.
Cherokee CountyFire - 1865, 1928.
Clayton CountyFire - 1864.
Clinch CountyFire - 1856, 1867.
Cobb CountyFire - 1864.
Coffee CountyFire - 1898, 1938.
Colquitt CountyFire - 1881.
Crawford CountyFire - 1829.
Dade CountyFire - 1865, 1895.
DeKalb CountyFire - 1842, 1898.
Dooly CountyFire - 1847.
Douglas CountyFire - 1896, 1957.
Early CountyFire - 1896.
Echols CountyFire - 1897.
Emanuel CountyFire - 1841, 1855, 1857, 1919, 1938.
Forsyth CountyFire - 1973.
Glynn CountyStorm - 1896.
Gordon CountyStorm - 1888.
Greene CountyTown burned by Indians in 1787.
Gwinnett CountyFire - 1871.
Habersham CountyFire - 1856. Blown up in 1898.
Hall CountyFire - 1851, 1882. Tornado in 1936.
Harris CountySet fire by Federal Troops in 1865, but quickly extinguished.
Hart CountyFire - 1900, 1967. Courthouse burned in 1967. Clerk & Ordinary's Office in adjacent building.
Heard CountyFire - 1893.
Henry CountyFire - 1824. 1864 (Some records destroyed by Sherman's men.)
Jenkins CountyFire - 1919.
Lee CountyFire - 1856. County seat then at Starkville. Fire at Leesburg in 1872.
Lowndes CountyFire - 1858, 1869.
Macon CountyFire - 1857.
Marion CountyFire - 1845.
McIntosh CountyFire - 1864, 1872, 1931.
Meriwether CountyCyclone - 3 March 1893. Fire - 1976.
Miller CountyFire - 1873, 1974.
Mitchell CountyFire - 1869.
Muscogee CountyFire - 1838.
Newton CountyFire - 1883.
Pickens CountyFire - 1947.
Pierce CountyFire - 1875.
Quitman CountyFire - 1920.
Screven CountyFire - 1860's, 1896.
Stewart CountyFire - 1922.
Talbot CountyFire - 1890.
Telfair CountyFire in the early 1900's.
Thomas CountyDamaged by storm in 1849.
