How to Obtain Death Records
![]()
U.S. death records earlier than 1900 are sometimes available in county courthouses or city halls. Later records may be centralized at the state level in a bureau of vital records. In some cases, privacy laws restrict access to this information.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services publishes a document entitled "Where to Write for Vital Records". A recent copy may be available in your local public or academic library, or you may purchase a copy from the Government Printing Office by phone at (202) 783-3238.
Detailed information about vital records and how to obtain them can be found in two publications: "International Vital Records Handbook" by Thomas J. Kemp (published by Genealogical Publishing Company), and "Ancestry's Red Book", edited by Alice Eichholz (published by Ancestry).
