William L. Douglass
Name: William L. Douglass
Birthplace:
Status: Born free
Occupation/Training: Clergyman
Residence: PA
Abolitionist Involvement: Douglass was pastor of one of a very few churches in Philadelphia where antislavery meetings were not held. St. Thomas Protestant Episcopal Church was the oldest and one of the nicest churches in that city, with carpets in the aisles and an organ. For awhile, Douglass was criticized by members of various abolitionist groups. Since many Blacks did not view July 4th as an appropriate holiday for the commemoration of freedom, it was decided to celebrate freedom on August 1st, the date of the British emancipation of slaves in the West Indies. Douglass opened his church in a formal observance of this holiday along with clergymen in other states, and began traveling to England to meet wt. reformers there.
