Benjamin Singleton
1809-1892
Name: Benjamin "Pap" Singleton
Birthplace: Tennessee
Status: Former Slave
Residence: Tennessee / Kansas
Abolitionist Involvement:
Benjamin "Pap" Singleton was one of two men to fire the enthusiasm of southern African Americans to migrate to Kansas - the one place in America where a former slave could be free. Southern whites forced congressional hearings on the issue [western migration], during which "Pap" clamed "I am the whole cause of the Kansas migration."
A sign enticing former slaves read: "Ho for Kansas! Brethren, friends, and fellow citizens: I feel thankful to inform you that the Real Estate and Homestead Association, will leave here the 15th of April 1878, in pursuit of homes in the southwestern lands of America, at transportation rates cheaper than ever was known before. For full information, inquire of Benj. Singleton, better know as old Pap. Nearly 100,000 African Americans migrated to Kansas during the late 1870's and early 1880's.
