Abolitionist Involvement: Born free in Virginia. Mary founded an organization called the Daughters of Zion. The focus of this organization was to give assistance to the poor and the sick. In 1851 Mary married Thomas Peake a free Negro. In 1861 she opened a school sponsored by the American Missionary Association. She was known as an exemplar teacher, and her schools and teaching methods were models for other schools.
