Esteban
Name: Esteban
Birthplace: Azamor, Morocco
Occupation/Training: Explorer
Abolitionist Involvement: This noted pioneer, and explorer was born in the late 1400's or early 1500's in. He was a slave of the Spaniard Andres Dorantes. He was one of four survivors of a major expedition, which took almost eight years in the Americas from Texas and Mexico to the Gulf of California, and then eventually Mexico City. He developed a strong relationship with the Indians of Mexico, and it is believed that from them he learned herbal medicine and methods of healing. He was hired to be a guide for Fray Marcos de Niza, who undertook an expedition to find the fabled Lost Cities of Cibola. Esteban led the expedition ahead of the sponsors of the journey.
It is agreed that Esteban reached the Zuni region of western New Mexico, and found the Hweikuh, the first of the Seven Cities. however, when Fray Marcos reached the same area, word was brought back that Esteban had been killed.
