Abolitionist Involvement: Paul Cuffee became known for his characteristics as a leader. He is best known for his influence in the settlement of former slaves in West Africa---in particular Sierra Leone.
He embraced the tenets of the faith of the Quaker religion and held strong belief in industry, frugality, and zeal as the basic ingredients in being a true Christian, and pleasing to God. He had a white indentured servant, with whom he had a close relationship, and a fair one. He donated money to the Society of Friends Meeting House, and worked diligently for the rights of the minority population, the Negro, and the Indian communities in New England.
Around 1810, he became interested in Africa, and made two trips to Sierra Leone. He won the respect of William Wilberofrece and other Englishmen. He earned audiences with President James Madison and other prominent statesmen of the day. He developed essentially a shipping dynasty, and established a business relationship with his sons-in-law to ship goods from Europe, Asia, and the West Indies.

Publications/References: A literate man, his journal, letters, and scrapbook are located in the Free Library in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Other items are located at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the New York Historical Society and Yale University.
