Abolitionist Involvement: Raised in a tradition on mental and moral improvement Crummell grew up among the activists in the Anti-Slavery Society in New York. He attended the African School, then was sent to a Noyes Academy in Canaan, New Hampshire. However, while there, local whites resented his presence and that of several other black students at the school and dragged them to the local swamp and terrorized them enough to leave. He later entered Oneidta Institute from which he obtained his education. Afterwards, he studied Theology, and became an Episcopal minister. He became a spokesperson for the Anti-Slavery movement, and also in the self improvement societies that formed in the 1830's.
His involvement in Anti-Slavery activities put him in regular contact with Frederick Douglass. From 1848 onward, he traveled abroad. In England he studied at Cambridge, then seeking a warmer climate, became a missionary in Liberia. He lived in Liberia till 1872, when problem over the color caste system forced him to leave and return to the United States. He settled in Washington DC and founded St. Luke's Church. He became a leader among Episcopalians in Washington and continued to be a leader in the church, bringing more colored priests to the faith than before. He lectured often publicly, and taught at Howard University. He died in Red Bank New Jersey in 1898.
