Abolitionist Involvement: Worked closely with free blacks in New York, and the Anti Slavery Society. Established churches between 1824-1858 in New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, and edited newspapers with John Russworm, and founded the Freedom Journal in 1827. Co-edited the Colored American. Worked in the many self improvement organizations in New York, and was a leader among the Free colored citizens in New York, particularly the New York City Phoenix Society Mutual Aid organization.
