Where's the Message I posted?

    Where's the message I posted?

When you post a message, it is available right away for other people to see, but you will not be able to see it yourself until you go offline and come back or close all of your screen windows and start over by going to the Genealogy Forum again.

The very next time that you return to the Genealogy Forum, be sure to do a "Find New" when you go to the message area. Only the messages posted since the last time you were there will appear (or old messages that have new replies). You should be able to see your own message posting now (provided you can remember what topic you posted in). If your posting is in reply to somebody else's message, you may need to view the original message again and select "List New" or "List Replies" or "List Responses" before you see your own message come up. Use your scroll bars and click on "more," if needed, so that you can see all the listings.

If you still can not find your message, you might try doing a "Find Since" when you enter the message area. A box will come up. Type in the number of days you want to look back. For example, if you type in a "7" you will be able to look at messages posted in the last week. (Remember that an older message will come up in the list, if it has a reply posted in the last week.) Now, you can select "List New" to see those messages posted in the last 7 days (week).

Any time you enter the message area, you can "List All" to see every active message. You will get a list of original postings. To see the replies to each original posting, you need to highlight or read the posting and then choose "List Responses." As for messages posted in the Surnames and most other boards, they are archived when the message area gets "full" and the area is wiped clean. When an area gets 500 folders or original topics, the memory allocated for that board is full and no new messages can be posted, although you could still post a response to an original message (making the total number of messages well over 800). The archive is uploaded in the Surnames Archives or other archives software libraries for anyone to copy. You can download and read this file offline, then send e-mail to the AOL member who posted in it. It is very easy to use an archived download if you have a word processor with a "search" feature. You could type in the surname or place or any word you are looking for and find it quickly. All of this can be done offline, saving time and money.
