Will the staff do my research?
The staff members can not do research for you, but we'd be glad to offer help as you get to know the resources in the Genealogy Forum so that you can do your own research. Of particular use to you would be the file library. There you can download archives for most of the older state message boards and search through the files offline using your word processor, to see if there are any names you are interested in.
Our forum works on a volunteer basis. Anyone can upload a library file, so what is available for viewing or downloading depends on what forum users like yourself choose to upload. The same is true for our message boards. Anyone can post messages and anyone may answer other postings. We invite you to post a public message and invite you to post a reply to anyone else's public message if you have information to offer them. There is no guarantee of a response, although most postings get responses, eventually. Some folks even find out that they are researching the same ancestor and are related! You might be most interested in posting a public message with your ancestor's name on the Alphabetic Surnames - Message Board under the proper letter of the alphabet topic. For example, if you are researching SMITH, you could go to the SM board and post a message. If you are researching names from a given area such as Canada, you could post your names in the "Canadian Genealogy" topic. There are many other topics, too.
The Internet is also a good place to search for records. Check out some of the sites in our Internet Center

When you find a Website such as Alta Vista or Google to do a search with, use the search word of "Alabama Genealogy" (no quotes) or something similar and see what comes up. You can also try your surnames WITH the word genealogy. This can bring surprising results.
