Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving in the Genealogy Forum
The staff and volunteers of GenealogyForum.com join together to wish you, your family, your extended family, and your friends a Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving is a time for spending time with family and friends, giving thanks for the bounty and blessings of the past year, and sharing those special family traditions that have developed over the years. We're starting a tradition of our own here in the Genealogy Forum. We've assembled a collection of Thanksgiving-related materials from all over the Genealogy Forum for you. Here's a description of what you'll find here:
Did you notice the great picture of the ship as you came here? Our own GFS Sam provided this photograph of the replica of the "Mayflower" that is anchored at Plymouth, MA. What better way to start your Thanksgiving trip through our collection?
The Origins of Thanksgiving
You learned in school about the Pilgrims and their first celebration of Thanksgiving with the Indians. We've collected some interesting, historically correct articles that describe Thanksgiving from a number of perspectives -- from the Pilgrims' point of view and the Native Americans' perspective.
Thanksgiving Recipe Traditions from our Ancestors
Our Members have shared hundreds of recipes with us from their much-cherished family cookbooks. Many of these have been passed from hand to hand, generation to generation, and have been lovingly preserved for posterity. They have become a part of individual families' traditions.
Here you'll find links to our Recipes Message Board and also to a collection we call "Ancestral Seasonings" --- a cookbook collection of Members' recipes. These recipes are from many national and ethnic backgrounds. We're sure you'll find some "new" recipes here for your holiday feast that will become instant favorites and a part of your family tradition!
"Where's Cousin Edith?"
You're planning a great family get-together for Thanksgiving, but you've lost touch with Cousin Edith. Oh no! You want her to join you if she can, but how do you find her? Never fear, we've collected some great Phone Search Facilities here in the Genealogy Forum to help you find her.
And what if you've lost touch with a whole branch of the family and want to reconnect? We have Message Boards that can help you make contact with lost relatives, and Members have been locating relatives and finding out about their family trees here for years. You can too!
Thanksgiving on the Internet
What would the Pilgrims say if they saw the Internet? And wouldn't they be amazed at how much information there is about them, their voyage, their history, and about Thanksgiving?
This area discusses the wealth of Information on the Internet's World Wide Web (WWW) and we have links to lots of areas of interest:
- The history of Thanksgiving
- Family traditions for celebrating the holiday
- Historical events and individuals
- Places to locate terrific Thanksgiving recipes
- Links to genealogical sites on the WWW dealing with ships' passenger lists, immigration, naturalization, and how to locate "lost" family members
Family History in Our File Libraries
Our Genealogy Forum's File Libraries Center contains more than 14,000 files related to genealogy, family history, traditions, available written records and how to use them, software, newsletters, and a host of other topics. We've collected some of our very best files about colonial history and family traditions for you, and we'll show you how to search the libraries for yourself!
Kids Eat the Craziest Things
What do kids think about Thanksgiving? What do they think of that big roast turkey? We've collected some colorful descriptions from kids about their views of Thanksgiving history and what they think they ate at Thanksgiving. Take a look at the Thanksgiving humor!
These will give you an idea about the depth of content and diversity of the Genealogy Forum. We hope you enjoy this collection, and that you have a great holiday. And after it's over, come back and visit your "online family" here at the Genealogy Forum.
