Happy Thanksgiving!
About This Collection
Thanksgiving in the United States is a national holiday, a celebration of the bounty and blessings that we enjoy. For centuries, school children have been taught about the virtues of the Pilgrims and their courage in sailing to the New World to make a new life for themselves. What we fail to remember to teach our children is that there are two sides to the story: that of the Pilgrims and that of the Native American Indians who were also players in this historic drama.
Our Native Americans' perspective differs from that of our European ancestors. Their own heritage and traditions are ancient and filled, too, with celebrations of thanksgiving for the bounties of the earth, the harvest, family, and nature. Native Americans celebrate their traditions and share a strong interest in their own genealogy -- from interest in their ancestors and the traditions, to a renewed interest in their original languages and culture.
We offer this collection of the Native Americans' perspective of Thanksgiving as celebrated in the United States. For many, this collection may be an educational and eye-opening experience. We hope the articles here will enlighten you and allow you to view our American history from another angle.
