1 CONC wrote a letter to Lucy who was in Seattle at the time stating Will 
1 CONC Harper's date of death.,,  "soon be six  years since Will's death...every 
1 CONC year seems so long time to have him gone...then we'll all live in hopes 
1 CONC to meet him then.  Wilson (their son) is a good Christian boy.  That is a 
1 CONC comfort for me, we go to church often."  So William must have died

1 CONC He was reared on a farm in the state of Indiana. October 1, 1861, he 
1 CONC enlisted in Company G, 43rd Indiana Volunteers, served in the 
1 CONC Trans-Mississippi department during the Civil War, and was discharged 
1 CONC October 18, 1864.

1 CONT During his time of service, he was engaged in the battles of Island #10, 
1 CONC New Madrid, the 9-weeks bombardment of Fort Pillow, the taking of 
1 CONC Memphis, TN; Yazoo Pass, Mississippi; Devall's Bluff and Helena, AK; 
1 CONC Little Rock, Prairie D'An, Elkin's Fork and Marks' Mill, Arkansas; and 
1 CONC was taken prisoner at the battle of Jenkin's Ferry, Arkansas.

1 CONT Owing to his having been severely wounded at the battle of Marks' Mill, 
1 CONC five days before, he was paroled, and a few days later was given an 
1 CONC honorable discharge from further duty in the ranks.  His army experiences 
1 CONC were unusually severe; he suffered extreme hardships and many times was 
1 CONC forced to march when weary and footsore without a bite to eat.

1 CONT Upon his discharge he returned to his farm where on November 25, 1865, he 
1 CONC married Laura E. Lawrence, (a sister of Lucy Lawrence, Floy May Hopper's 
1 CONC mother, Alvin Hopper's mother.)

1 CONT In January 1890, they came to Almira, WA near where they took a homestead 
1 CONC and lived until 1897.  Then because of ill health, they were compelled to 
1 CONC leave the prairie and came to Davenport, WA and purchased 80 acres of 
1 CONC land, raising vegetables, fruit and berries.

1 CONT He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and the GAR of Davenport.  The 
1 CONC family attended the Methodist Episcopal church.  His date of death was 
1 CONC referred to in a letter written by Laura to Lucy in 1917, stating that 
1 CONC "soon be six  years since Will's death...every year seems so long time to 
1 CONC have him gone...then we'll all live in hopes to meet him then.  Wilson

1 CONC Fox" - Francis Marion.

1 CONC 27).  Mary Jane was born in Kentucky.  Elijah was born in Indiana.  Also 
1 CONC at this residence was Quincy A. (age 18).  Children listed  are Polly A. 
1 CONC Hannah (age 9), Wm. A. (age 4) and Margaret C. (age 1).  All These

1 CONC Harper's Ferry was first settled in 1732 by Peter Stephens whose 
1 CONC "squatter's rights" were bought in 1747 by a Robert Harper, for whom the 
1 CONC town was named, and who first operated ferries across the Potomac and 
1 CONC Shenandoah Rivers.  This Robert Harper was an uncle and never married.  
1 CONC Incorporated by Circuit Court in 1872, President George Washington asked 
1 CONC Congress in 1794 for an Armory and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry.  building 
1 CONC was commenced in 1796.  Scene eof John Brown's raid in 1859.

1 CONT Robert was born 1713 in Jefferson County, eastern W. Virginia in the Blue 
1 CONC Ridge Mountains at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.  
1 CONC This area was settled in 1732, incorporated in 1763 and named 'Harper's 
1 CONC Ferry' after he began to operate a ferry across the Potomac River in 
1 CONC 1747.  He died in 1782.

1 CONT In the late 1790's a U.S. arsenal and armory were established at Harper's 
1 CONC Ferry.

1 CONT In 1859 the arsenal of rifles here at Harper's Ferry was seized in a 
1 CONC famous raid by the abolitionist, John Brown, and during the Civil War the 
1 CONC strategically located town was the site of a number of engagements

1 CONT Harper's Ferry National Historical Partk established in 1944 as a 
1 CONC national monument, and redesignated in 1963, includes several old 
1 CONC structures restored as museums.  This includes several buildings of

1 CONC L.A. Harper was converted in Woodland church  in Edwards County in 1852.  
1 CONC He preached his first sermon here and was licensed here on Jan. 24, 1857.
1 CONT His first pastorate was the Shiloh Methodist Church in St. Clair County, 
1 CONC Il.  From the time he started preaching until, just two weeks before his 
1 CONC death, he kept a Journal of his pastorates, intineraries, and facts he

1 CONT His life was often very hard and he was widowed twice.   As a result, he 
1 CONC had to have his children living with other relatives quite a bit.  He 
1 CONC also had several children die at an early age.  His third wife, Angelina

1 CONC had died when Lewis was only two years old and his grandfather died the 
1 CONC same year.  His Mother was forced to sell their farm and Lewis went out 
1 CONC on his own at an early age.

1 CONC Angelina Hayes supposedly was kin to Rutherford B. Hayes.  Her family 
1 CONC were (or had been) German Lutherans.  Angie was born in Lewis County , KY 
1 CONC on July 24, 1836.  Her  family  moved to  Ohio  from Kentucky.  Their 
1 CONC farm was "swallowed up" by Cinncinnati.  They moved to Southern Illinois 
1 CONC about 1850.  Eliza Gatton and Sadie Darrow were her sisters who lived in 
1 CONC DeSoto, IL.   Mary Jane married a man whose last name was Lewis.  Other 
1 CONC relatives who lived near DeSoto were named Heple (Frank).  Her brother, 
1 CONC James, from Murphysboro, visited Harpers in 1870.  Grandfather Harper did 
1 CONC not meet her father and stepmother until May 7, 1873.  Grandfather Hayes 
1 CONC died 5/16/75.

1 CONT Eliza married John Gatton in 1835 or 1836.  She had two girls, Lucretia 
1 CONC and Cassandra.  Cassandra was just three years younger than Angelina.  
1 CONC Early one morning, John Gatton left home, riding one horse and leading 
1 CONC another which he planned to sell.  He was never seen again.  After 
1 CONC waiting, searching for some time, they decided that he and his horses had 
1 CONC been captured by Indians.  Eliza took her two little girls and went back 
1 CONC to her father's home.  There the children grew up seeming more like 
1 CONC sisters than nieces to their mother's younger brothers and sisters.  
1 CONC Eliza never remarried.
