2 CONT   In all the violent effort shown by the olympic athelete, none was more
2 CONT dramatic  - or more exhausting - than that of Yale's victorious crew.
2 CONT Surprisingly and badly beaten in the first race, the U.S. eight-oared entry
2 CONT still could qualify for the semifinals by winning a reperchage, or second
2 CONT chance heat.  But in all Olympic history no beaten crew had ever come back to
2 CONT win.  Most rowing officials at Melbourne thought the strain would be too much
2 CONT for the youthful Ellis, whose average age is 20.
2 CONT   But Yale's eight reacted to the stinging defeat by winning two races in a row
2 CONT to earn another crack at Australia and Canada, who had beaten them in the first
2 CONT heat.  With 40,000 people watching from the shores of Lake Wendouree,  Yale
2 CONT surged in front to win by half a length.  Only then did the Elis show the
2 CONT severe exertion and tension of their comeback.  Crew-cut oarman flopped over in
2 CONT exhaustion, tears of pain and happiness running down their faces.  No one
2 CONT chalenged their captain Tom Charlton's post race boast: "We're the toughest crew
2 CONT ever put together and we beat the finest."

2 CONT     We all of us like to have our ideas corroborated, and on seeing your
2 CONT editorial article "The League of Youth" in last Sunday's TIMES, I felt sure
2 CONT that you would be intisely(?) such a youth movement as you suggest was started
2 CONT late in October by some students in the Taft School, who have laid very definite
2 CONT plans for spreading it through the schools of New England, and who hope later to
2 CONT see it become a nation-wide organization. The name adopted is Young America - a
2 CONT name by nature full of tradition from the heroic deeds of youths in Italy,
2 CONT Turkey and elsewhere.  Our service may be in a different feild from theirs, but
2 CONT we believe the need to be as great, for who of us  be as great, for who of us
2 CONT can face the questions of the Ku Klux Klan, the enforcement of the Eighteenth
2 CONT Amendment, the Church, the next war, the so called "decline of civilization"
2 CONT and a host of others with which we are all familiar without feeling the
2 CONT need of a moral revolution?
2 CONT    Broadly speaking, our objects are these: To arouse the
2 CONT young men and women of the nation to a love of good citizenship;

2 CONT CHARLES PENNEBAKER GRIMES was born in Tacoma, Wash., May 31, 1904, the son of
2 CONT Charles Ysla and Rose (Pennebaker) Grimes.  His father, who was a graduate of
2 CONT Columbian [now George Washington] College, died in March, 1920; he was formerly
2 CONT archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, Wash.  Grimes has two sisters.
2 CONT   He was prepared for college at the Stadium High School in Tacoma and at the
2 CONT Taft School.  He entered Yale with the Class of 1928, but joined our class in
2 CONT September, 1926.  He held a New York Yale Club Scholarship during the last two
2 CONT years of his course. He was on the University 150-pound Crew Squad in 1925 and
2 CONT won a minor "Y" as a member of the University Wrestling Team the next year.
2 CONT Grimes was on the 1928 Freshman Glee Club Squad and on the University Glee
2 CONT Club Squad in 1925-26.  He was a member of the University Debating Association.
2 CONT   He roomed with J.L. Green, '28, while at Yale (at 291 York Street, 199
2 CONT Fayerweather, and 28 Vanderbilt). S.C. Peelle, Jr.'28, lived with them in

2 CONT of telegrams and letters from all parts of the county begging him to "do
2 CONT something," President Roosevelt decided today to send Congress in a few days a
2 CONT bill designed to stem the tide of deflation that has been rising with
2 CONT increasing momentum in the nation's industrial centers since last Monday when
2 CONT the Supreme Court "threw out the baby with the bath" in the Schechter case
2 CONT decision.      Those of the President's advisers led by General Johnson, who
2 CONT urged him to assert his leadership and "get tough," won the battle for
2 CONT immediate action.        Resolutions sent to the White House by trade
2 CONT associations, calling on members to abide voluntarily by wage, hour, and child
2 CONT labor provisions of the now defunct codes, failed to overcome the impression
2 CONT created by widespread reports of strikes engendered by wage cuts and
2 CONT lengthening of hours, on the heels of the court ruling.      LEADERS STUDY TWO
2 CONT PROPOSALS.    Scores of plans and measures of all sorts have been pouring in on
2 CONT administration officials, while the NIRB wrestled today with its own program of
2 CONT legislative suggestions.   General Johnson, who again called at the White
2 CONT House, made recommendations for legislation.      Important administration
2 CONT circles are considering proposals by two government officials, one for a
2 CONT temporary arrangement to replace the NRA and one based on long-range policy.
2 CONT One of these plans was explained to Senator Harrison of the Finance Committee
2 CONT and an outline of both plans was sent to Solicitor General Reed.    The
2 CONT temporary plan was offered by John Drummond Kennedy of New York, assistant NRA
2 CONT administrator in charge of food codes, and the permanent proposal was advanced
2 CONT by Charles P. GRIMES, of the NRA legal division, formerly associated with the
2 CONT New York law firm of Cravath, de Gersdorff, Swaine & Wood.

2 CONT yesterday, rounding out his staff.  Three will serve on salary. They are Sewell
2 CONT T. Tyng, 40 years old; Charles P. Grimes, 31 and Jacob Grumet, 35.  He also
2 CONT appointed without title, two $1 a year men, Edward S. Joseph, 25, and Harris B.
2 CONT Steinberg, 23.......Mr. Grimes is the son of the Rev. Charles Y. Grimes,
2 CONT archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, Wash.  He served as senior
2 CONT reviewing counsel on the NRA.

2 CONT  We have just conducted an investigation of Charles P. Grimes, Dewey's assistant
2 CONT in charge of the Hines investigation.  We find that he generally prepares
2 CONT for anything important by staying up all night.  He stayed up all night before
2 CONT his marriage, in 1933.  Last year he stayed up all ight before leading the
2 CONT raid in Philadelphia in which Dixie Davis, Hope Dare, and George Weinberg were
2 CONT captured.  Accompanied by a sergeant and two detectives, Grimes drove from New
2 CONT York late at night (he had stayed up at a party the night before this) and was
2 CONT stopped on the outskirts of Philadelphia for going eighty M.P.H.  He and his
2 CONT men flashed their badges and were permitted to proceed after some scathing
2 CONT remarks.  As they were circling the apartment house where their quarry lay,
2 CONT another Philadelphia cop came along and stood right in front of the house
2 CONT under a street lamp.  He suspected something interesting was up and didn't want
2 CONT to miss it.  A Grimes detective finally drove him off by whipping out a gun and
2 CONT threatening to shoot him.  The raiders got into the building when Grimes rang
2 CONT the house telephone of a doctor tenant and told his wife there's been a bad
2 CONT accident.  She clicked the electric lock on the front door and the raiding
2 CONT party burst into the Weinberg-Davis suite.  Dixie was speechless with fright.
2 CONT He thought someone had sent some of the boys down to knock them off.
2 CONT  The Asst. D.A. is tall, wide, handsome, and reticent, and is called Charlie by
2 CONT most people.  He comes of a long line of Virginians but was born, thirty-four
2 CONT years ago, in Tacoma, Washington, where his father was Episcopal Archdeacon of
2 CONT the Diocese of Olympia.  At nine he made up his mind to be a lawyer, being
2 CONT moved to this decision by the fact that around that time a crooked lawyer
2 CONT stole a valuable water-power site from his father.  Charlie wanted to
2 CONT become a lawyer not to steal power sites but to keep them from being stolen.
2 CONT Most of his father's money was lost in the power site episode, and Grimes went
2 CONT through the Taft School and Yale on scholarships.  He was impatient with the
2 CONT New Haven curriculum and took the regular four year course and a half year of
2 CONT law in three years.  The college dean, thinking this was a reflection on Yale,
2 CONT tried to discourage him by stipulating that he maintain an honors' average.
2 CONT Grimes did this and on the side won letters in wrestling and crew, read all of
2 CONT Proust, and tutored small, wealthy children in the summer.  He graduated with
2 CONT the class of 1927 and still feels a greater spiritual kinship with '28.
2 CONT   After law school, Grimes worked for Cravath, De Gersdorff, Etc., and later
2 CONT was in Washington as counsel for NRA and PWA.  He joined Dewey's in 1935.  One
2 CONT of his jobs was the extradition of Alexander Pompez, the Harlem numbers banker,
2 CONT from Mexico.  A mexican army officer whom Grimes met at a party in Mexico City
2 CONT offered to have Pompez bumped off and delivered for 200 pesos, or $50.  Grimes
2 CONT said he wanted him aline.  The Mexican officer couldn't get this point of view,
2 CONT Grimes was further astonished in Mexico by the politness of a secret agent with
2 CONT whom he and the Chief of Police of Mexico City drove around a good deal.  The
2 CONT agent, a stout, elderly fellow, always insisted on sitting up front with the
2 CONT chauffeur, leaving Grimes in the more comfortable seat with the Chief of Police.
2 CONT Grimes remonstrated at this excessive consideration on the part of an older
2 CONT man.  The agent explained that he knew of six criminals who had taken an oath
2 CONT to kill the Chief of Police, and he felt happier in front.
2 CONT   Grimes is a member of the Yale, Union League, and Seawanhaka-Corinthian Yacht
2 CONT Clubs, and of the Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders & Helpers Union of America,
2 CONT Mt. Tahoma Lodge, No. 348.  He joined the union while working summers during
2 CONT the war.  He likes to sing old sea chanteys he learned during this period, and
2 CONT accompany them by dancing a hornpipe.  He did this at the last annual New
2 CONT Year's Eve ball at Tuxedo, raising himself considerably in the estimation of a
2 CONT good many people who had hitherto looked on him simply as an assistant
2 CONT district attorney.

2 CONT the Grimes back, hunched down in his seat, in the manner of tall men.
2 CONT   Once or twice only in more than three weeks of trial he has risen to question
2 CONT an unimportant witness or to read a document into the trial record.  High
2 CONT forehead, dark complexion. Mild-voiced and gentle mannered.  You would take him
2 CONT to belong to the Harvard Club, and, possibly, on the board of trustees of the
2 CONT Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.  You would take him to be
2 CONT out of place in the atmosphere of gangsters, of racketeers, of policy gambling
2 CONT combines, of gangster chiefs issuing ultimata to reluctant policy bankers at
2 CONT midnight, slapping loaded revolvers on kitchen tables to stress a point.
2 CONT   Now and then you see the long Grimes form lean to the left, whisper briefly
2 CONT to Dewey or to diminutive Sol Gelb, another Dewey assistant.  What they say you
2 CONT do not know, but...
2 CONT   Though he doesn't seem to "belong" among the mobsters who follow each other
2 CONT on the witness stand, he is no stranger to their ways.  Grimes is Dewey's
2 CONT expert on policy.  For some three years past he has immersed himself in policy,
2 CONT studied it from every possible approach, pursued every suggestion, followed
2 CONT every tip.  How policy is played, how banks are operated, how Schultz organized
2 CONT and maintained his combine, big bankers and little bankers, the Dutchman and
2 CONT the veriest little punk - all these he knows about in greater detail than the
2 CONT witnesses Dewey calls to the stand.... possibly better the the Dutchman
2 CONT himself, before a spray of gangsters' bullets cut short his career.  WEER.

2 CONT following year.  The country is much better for the children, but I must
2 CONT confess that the daily commuting does not fit in too well with the life of a
2 CONT fairly busy practitioner of the law.
2 CONT   "Together, my wife and I are engaged in attempting to solve the insoluble
2 CONT problems of middle age, increased taxation, proper education for our children,
2 CONT personal security, and normalcy in a world gone mad (at least by our
2 CONT standards).
2 CONT   "Personally, I have been lucky enough to retain nearly all of my hair and
2 CONT teeth and to be able to keep my waistline down to workable size.  And I still
2 CONT obstinately refuse to see any resemblance between byself and the old gray mare
2 CONT (although my medicos do). Consequently, I still enjoy hard and regular
2 CONT exercise.
2 CONT   "I have maintained more than an academic interest in public affairs, which
2 CONT reached a low ebb after the election of 1948, but is on the ascendancy with the
2 CONT election of Eisenhower.  During his campaign I participated in fund raising for
2 CONT the United Republican Finance Committee, principally on the North Shore of Long
2 CONT Island."
2 CONT   In this connection Charlie said:"from my standpoint the election of
2 CONT Eisenhower was the most heartening world event in many years.  Before that I

2 CONT COUNSEL FOR SENATE INTERNAL SECURITY UNIT IN 1954 HAD AIDED DEWEY ON RACKETS.
2 CONT Charles P. Grimes, former chief counsel of the United State Internal Security
2 CONT Subcommittee, died on Wednesday night at New York Hospital after suffering a
2 CONT heart attach earlier in the day. His age was 53.   Mr. Grimes, who lived at
2 CONT Locust Valley, L.I., was a partner in the law firm of Cole, Grimes, Friedman &
2 CONT Deits, 30 Broad St. last year he been counsel to Wes Santee, the American track
2 CONT star, in Mr. Santee's fight to retain amateur status against a National Amateur
2 CONT Athletic Union ruling.  Appointed to the Internal Security Subcommittee post in
2 CONT January, 1954, Mr. Grimes served until mid-June of that year, under the
2 CONT chairmanship of Senator William E. Jenner, Republican of Indiana.   Mr. Grimes'
2 CONT subsequent resignation was said to have been due to a disagreement with
2 CONT committee members on investigative policies.  He had failed in his request for
2 CONT a larger staff and some of his plans had not been accepted.    A graduate of
2 CONT Taft School, Yale College (1927); and Yale Law School (1930), Mr. Grimes
2 CONT started his career with the law firm of Cravath, de Gresdorff, Swaine & Wood.
2 CONT In 1935, he became senior counsel of the National Recovery Administration.
2 CONT Later that year he was named a deputy assistant District Attorney on the staff
2 CONT of Thomas E. Dewey when Mr. Dewey was the special rackets prosecutor here.
2 CONT Aided in Hines Case.  On Mr. Dewey's staff, Mr. Grimes played a prominent part
2 CONT in the successful prosecution of the late James J. Hines, the Tammany leader,
2 CONT who was charged with participation in the operations of a policy gang.  Mr.
2 CONT Grimes also had a part in the investigation and prosecution of several others
2 CONT who were prominent on the Dewey list. Among them the notorious policy banker
2 CONT whom he suceeded in having extradited from Mexico, and a well known gangster and
2 CONT his companions whose apprehension in Philadelphia hide-out he achieved in a
2 CONT daring police raid.   At his death Mr. Grimes had been engaged in writing a
2 CONT book on several aspects of American foreign policy as seen through the eyes of
2 CONT a former internal security official..   In his home neighborhood he had found
2 CONT time to be chairman of the Zoning Appeals Board of Lattingtown, L.I., and
2 CONT president of the Nonpartisans Civic Association of Nassau County.  He belonged
2 CONT to the Racquet and Tennis, Union League, Piping Rock, Creek, Yale and Church
2 CONT Clubs.  He leaves his wife, Mrs. Louise Ireland Grimes, a son, Charles L.
2 CONT Grimes, and two daughters, the Misses Arline and Lucy Lee Grimes.

2 CONT operator, died yesterday at his summer home, Bar Harbor, Maine, after a long

2 CONT  He has lived retired for about five years, spending his summers at Bar Harbor,
2 CONT and traveling much of the time.  For the past two years his health has been
2 CONT failing.
2 CONT  He was a self-made man. As a young man he clerked in a Wilkes-Barre store.
2 CONT The way to wealth opened-up when he entered the coal business as an operator.
2 CONT He first operated the Grand Tunnel mine at Avondale with the late W.J. Harvey
2 CONT as a partner. Later he leased a large tract at Warrior Run and for nearly forty
2 CONT years operated it successfully, retiring after he sold the property to the
2 CONT Lehigh Valley Coal Company, receiving for it, it is said, a million dollars.

2 CONT Dana, a French Protestant who had fled from persecution, first to England, and
2 CONT about 1640 to America, settling in what is now the town of Brighton, MA.  In
2 CONT the fall of 1772 this family removed into the Wyoming valley, on the
2 CONT Susquehanna.  With her seventh child in her arms, not yet two months old, and
2 CONT her sixth, a little boy of only three summers, holding on, as they journeyed on
2 CONT horseback, the mother rode that whole distance, some three hundred miles into
2 CONT the wilderness, the last fifty miles only marked trees for her guide.
2 CONT "Here,"(I quote the address of Rev. Mr. Bouton, at the funeral of Rev.
2 CONT Sylvester Dana, June 11, 1849, the latter being the little boy of three years
2 CONT alluded to above)" for six years, the Dana family prospered.  In 1778 the
2 CONT father represented the town of Westmoreland in the general assembly of
2 CONT Connecticut.  Returning home on the 28th of June, after an absence of eight
2 CONT weeks, he was an actor and a victim in that tragic scene which the very next
2 CONT week occurred in that beautiful valley.  On the third of July a band of British
2 CONT troops and tories, led on by Col. John Butler, with seven hundred savage
2 CONT auxilliaries, attacked and utterly destroyed the settlement."  Most of the
2 CONT men were slain, their homes burned, their property either destroyed or
2 CONT carried away, and women and children who escaped the massacre, fled through the
2 CONT wilderness to the nearest white settlement"  Among those who thus fled, was
2 CONT Susanna Dana, who, "with seven children, in a state then of total destitution,
2 CONT commenced her flight on foot, amid the darkness of the night, through that
2 CONT dreary wilderness of fifty miles.  Wolves howled on every side of then; but the
2 CONT terror of savages who might be on their track hastened their steps.  Nor
2 CONT did they stop, except as necessity for rest and refreshment compelled,
2 CONT till the three hundred miles that separated them from their kindred in Ashford
2 CONT had been retraced."  Nor does this give full measure of that mother's ability
2 CONT and courage.  When it became apparent that their only safety was in flight, she
2 CONT set herself calmly to the work of collecting such food as would be most easily
2 CONT taken with them;and then, as though there was still something besides present
2 CONT salvation desirable, she collected a pillowcase of papers and public documents,
2 CONT as her husband had been much in public life for the colony, and determined if
2 CONT possible to take them with her.  In this she succeeded, and Mr. Minor, the
2 CONT historian of that awful tragedy, acknowledges his obligations for that noble
2 CONT thoughtfulness.  Few incidents in the lives of illustrious women exceed this,
2 CONT in all the elements of true greatness.  Not till the family, eight in number,
2 CONT had reached Bullock's Mountain, ten miles from their late happy home, did they
2 CONT learn of the deaths of those two husbands, their needed protectors.  Here they
2 CONT learned the horrible story, and alone, yet with unfaltering step, they urged on
2 CONT their unprotected flight.

2 CONT Brookline, Nashua died at a local hospital this morning. He was born in Lisbon,
2 CONT Nov 21 1893, son of G. Leston Barrett and Emma D. (Lamkin).  Mr. Barrett had
2 CONT been an employee of the Boston and Maine railroad for over 43 years, for the
2 CONT past 27 he had been storekeeper for the Boston and Maine at the Kippers plant
2 CONT in Nashua.  He was a member of the First Congregational church of Nashua and
2 CONT had been an attendant during the years of his residence here.   He was a
2 CONT veteran of World War I and served overseas with Company D, 14th Railway
2 CONT Engineers.   Fraternally, he was a past grand master of NH Grand Lodge, IOOF in
2 CONT 1932 and 1933; member of White Mountain lodge No.5 IOOF Concord; Encampment
2 CONT Branch of Concord; Canton, No.9, Patriarchs Militant of Nashua, and Fidelity
2 CONT Lodge of Rebekahs in Concord.  Mr. Barrett was also a past president of the
2 CONT Past Grand Representatives Association of the International Order of Odd
2 CONT Fellows (IOOF).  Members of his family include his wife, Mrs. Isabelle (Smith)
2 CONT Barrett; two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie E. Moore of Corinna, ME; Mrs. Janice H.

2 CONT   Happy to have their four children and six grandchildren present to make merry
2 CONT at this typical home life event.  Mr. and Mrs. Barrett will hold "open House"
2 CONT to greet old friends and neighbors from all over the state.  A cordial welcome
2 CONT is extended to all at their home on the Daniel Webster Highway, a short
2 CONT distance from Ashland Square.
2 CONT  Mr. and Mrs. Barrett began their married life in Lisbon, on December 27, 1894,
2 CONT and for many years took part in church and fraternal work.  They were, members
2 CONT of the M.E. Church. Mr. Barrett, a faithful employee for many years of the
2 CONT Parker-Young Co., is a Past Master of the I.O.O.F. in Lisbon, while Mrs.
2 CONT Barrett is Past Worthy Matron of the O.E.S. in Ashland.
2 CONT  Two sons and two daughters have blessed their union. Arthur, after seving two
2 CONT years in France with the 14th Engineers, has been employed the past sixteen
2 CONT years by the Boston & Maine R.R.  He is a Past Grand Master of the I.O.O.F. of
2 CONT New Hampshire.
2 CONT   Howard, a graduate of the General Electric apprentice school for mechanics is
2 CONT employed by the Standard Oil Co.  Both sons reside with their families in
2 CONT Nashua.
2 CONT   Nellie, a former teacher in the Lisbon schools and in Massachusetts, is the
2 CONT wife of Gustav F. Braun of Everett, Massachusetts.
2 CONT   Maude, formerly secretary in the firm of William Whitman Co. of Boston,

1 NOTE Youngest of 9 children. Married Annie Chase and settled in Vershire, VT.  Came
2 CONT to Lisbon from Vershire in March 1809, and lived the rest of life there.
2 CONT Lemuel died at home of son, Ezra.  Buried beside wife in Salmon Hole Cemetary.

2 CONT before the judge of the court of the Probate of Wills &c. for said county now
2 CONT sitting Lemuel Barrett a resident of Lisbon in said county aged seventy one
2 CONT years who being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following
2 CONT declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congrefs pafsed June
2 CONT 7, 1882.    I entered the service of the United States under the following
2 CONT named officers and served as herein stated    I enlisted about the 2nd July
2 CONT 1780 at Chelmsford Mafsachusetts under Captain Joseph Emerson(?) & was in a few
2 CONT days ordered to Springfield Mafs. where I pafsed muster and from thence I was
2 CONT ordered to West Point to help fill up the vacancy made in the army by the
2 CONT discharge of the three year men so called   I there joined Captain Benjamin
2 CONT Pierces Company in Col. Jacksons Regiment and General Lameds(?) Brigade Col.
2 CONT Jacksons christian name (I believe) was Harvy(?).  Benedict Arnold commanded at
2 CONT West Point   I left the Point as near as I can recollect about the last of
2 CONT August with the army under the command of General Washington we crofsed Forth
2 CONT (?) River at the Point and marched to Blank Point where the army stayed about
2 CONT three days from thence we marched to a place called I believe Yanucks(?)
2 CONT crofsing the river Kinds Ferry and then to corimpond where I first heard of
2 CONT the treachery of Arnold and the capture of General Ardrer    General Washington
2 CONT had left the army before we were at Coumspond to go to Commed out I believe I
2 CONT do not recollect how long we were at Crumfsond but I am very certain that Gen
2 CONT Andro was executed  while the army was at or near Crumpond we went from
2 CONT Crumsond to Paramus to Lotowdy and then returned to West Point until discharged
2 CONT which was about the 2nd of January 1781.  I lost my discharge about forty years
2 CONT ago.    I also wend as a substitute of my father BENJAMIN Baarrett three months
2 CONT in the year 1779   my father enlisted at Chelmsford in Captain Pollards Company
2 CONT of State troops (I believe) in August   I took my fathers place and marched
2 CONT from Chelmsford to Albany and thence to the new city of Luwingburg (New York)
2 CONT I with the company under the command of Captain Pollard was cemployed in the
2 CONT vicinity of Lansingburg rafting and cond continued at Lansingburg or in the
2 CONT vicinity until discharged sometime in November 1779.  I do not recollect the
2 CONT christian name of Captain Pollard nor the name of the other officers while at
2 CONT Lansinburg we were employed usually in small squads  I therefore had not an
2 CONT opportunity to know much about the officers
2 CONT I hereby relinquish every durm(?) whatever to a pension or annuity except the
2 CONT present and declare that my name is not on the pension roll of the agency of
2 CONT any state    I was born in the town of  Chelmsford Mafsachusetts October 12
2 CONT 1761 my birth is recorded in the town records of Vershire Vermont  my discharge
2 CONT was was signed by Colonel Jackson.
2 CONT I am known by Bruce Savage Charles Cowen David Cowen all Clergymen and Lamkin
2 CONT Round Esq. who will testify to my character for veracity and their belief of my
2 CONT services as a revolutionary soldier  I have no written evidence of any
2 CONT services.
2 CONT   Sworn to and subscribed Lemuel Barrett the day and year aforesaid.  Before
2 CONT Mr. Edward Webber Judge of Probate.  and Joshua Quimby a clergyman of said
2 CONT Lisbon & Charles Cowen a clergyman of Newbery & formerly of Lisbon of was made

1 NOTE On this 14th day of June 1843 personally appeared before ous the subscribed
2 CONT D.C. Churshell a Justice of the Court of Common Pleas within and for said
2 CONT County of Grafton  ANNA BARRETT of Lisbon in the County of Grafton and State of
2 CONT New Hampshire aged 69 years who being first duly Sworn according to law doth in
2 CONT her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtiain the benefit of the
2 CONT provision made by the Act of Congress passed July 7, 1838 entitled "an act
2 CONT granting half pay and Pension to certain widows"
2 CONT   That she is the widow of Lemuel Barrett of Lisbon in the County of Grafton
2 CONT and State of New Hampshire who was a private in the ARmy of the Revolution and

2 CONT married to him prior to leaving the the service but this marriage took place
2 CONT Previous to the first of January Seventeen hundred ninty four vis at the time
2 CONT above states.
2 CONT   She further states she does not know whether her marriage is recorded in the
2 CONT Town of Peirmont in the State of New Hampshire where it took place and she has
2 CONT no family record now in her possession.  She formerly has a record of her
2 CONT marriage and birth of her children in her Bibler but the Bible is worn out and
2 CONT destroyedand she did not keep a copy of the record her name before marriage was
2 CONT Anna Chase she lived in Haverhill New Hampshire before her marriage and the
2 CONT said Lemuel Barrett lived in Peirmont in said State and we were married at the
2 CONT time aforesaid in said Peirmont and resided there until the month of January
2 CONT after our marriage but then moved to Vershire in the State of Vermont and
2 CONT lived  several years years and several of her children were born in said
2 CONT Vershire and a part of the childrens births are recorded in said Vershire as
2 CONT she believes she further states that she has had twelve children by said
2 CONT husband five of whom only are now living   we moved from said Vershire to
2 CONT Orford New Hampshire and lived a while and then we moves back to said Vershire
2 CONT when his land a  from thence was moved to Lisbon New Hampshire where the same
2 CONT and now resides

2 CONT the rate of thirty dollars per annum under the Act of 1832 that she is in
2 CONT receipt of a Pension from the United States under the Act of _____   at the
2 CONT same rate per annum that her husband drew and that his name is on the Roll of
2 CONT the Concord, NH agency.
2 CONT   She further declares that she was married to the said Lemuel Barrett in the
2 CONT town of Piermont in same state in the month of May AD 1792 that her same
2 CONT husband died on the 4th day of October in the year 1842 that his her name
2 CONT before this same marriage was Anna Chase and that she still remains a widow
2 CONT She makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to
2 CONT which she may be entitled under the Act approved March 3, 1855.  signed Anna

2 CONT Head.  He traveled abroad for a year, and in 1891 went into the real estate
2 CONT business in New York City, being for many years a partner in the firm of Strong
2 CONT & Ireland.  He is now engaged in transportation work.
2 CONT   He is a member of the University Club and the Oakland Golf Club.
2 CONT   He is brother of Robert L. Ireland of this Class, and of James Duane Ireland,

2 CONT president of the Hanna Coal Co. until June, 1946, when it became
2 CONT a division of the Pittsburgh (Pa.) Consolidation Coal Co., at

2 CONT committee of the latter company positions he has since held. Mr.
2 CONT Ireland is also a director and member of the executive committee
2 CONT of The M. A. Hanna Co.and a director of the Phelps Dodge Corp.,

2 CONT director of the National Coal Association since 1945 and has
2 CONT served on many of its committees and affiliated organizations.

2 CONT volunteers in the Narragansett War.  In 1696 "Lieut Thomas Leffinwell of
2 CONT Norwich and Serjt. John Frink of Stonington moved this Court that they with the
2 CONT rest of the English volunteers in the former warrs might have a plantation
2 CONT granted to them....The land was situated a little east of Norwich, and along
2 CONT the Thode Island line....A committee composed of ...Lieut. SOLOMON TRACY..was
2 CONT recognised by the General Court in February, 1713/14, as a "committee elected
2 CONT by themselves for the management of the plantation."  In 1723 church
2 CONT established was said to have been the only Presbyterian church in Connecticut,
2 CONT but in 1779 was reorganized as a Congregational.

1 NOTE HISTORY OF STRATFORD NH (1923) P.403 - Joshua Lamkin was one of Stratford's
2 CONT earliest settlers.  His name is among those who came here in the summer of
2 CONT 1772, and he was undoubtedly one of the Judson settlers, since Agur Judson of
2 CONT Stratford, Conn., transfers land to him November 15, 1773; and he settled on
2 CONT the Judson lots, now the Burnside place.  His is one of the seven families that
2 CONT braved the dangers and loneliness of a frontier town during the Revolution.
2 CONT His name appears frequently in the early records, often as Captain Lamkin, a
2 CONT title earned perhaps in Connecticut.
2 CONT Joshua Lamkin was one of the first selectmen chosen by the proprietors in 1773.
2 CONT  He held several offices , and his name is signed, as moderator, to petitions,
2 CONT etc, as late as 1800.
2 CONT The Lamkin family is supposed to have come from Cape Cod, but we cannot locate
2 CONT Joshua's birthplace.  He buys land near Stratford, CT about 1762.  He was an
2 CONT Episcopalian.

2 CONT P.690, 691(FERGUSON LIBRARY, STAMFORD, CT): Samuel Huntington, born in Norwich,
2 CONT CT, March 1, 1665.  Here He married, Oct 29 1686, Mary, dau, probably of
2 CONT William Clark, of Wethersfield. He removed to Lebanon in 1700, having sold his
2 CONT househlot and house in Norwich for a parsonage.  He was Deputy to the General
2 CONT Court from Lebanon in Oct 1705, and May 1708; was appointed Lieutenant of first
2 CONT trainband of Lebanon in May 1709.  Before his removal he had become a public
2 CONT man, having filled several offices, being as early as 1692 appointed constable,
2 CONT having already been one of the Townsmen.  How well he was thought of in
2 CONT Norwich,  appears from his appointment by the citizens of Norwich, ten years
2 CONT after his removal to Levanon, on a Committee to locate the new meeting house
2 CONT about which a serious dispute had arisen.  The site chosen by the committee was
2 CONT not approved by the town, and the church was erected upon another spot.  But a
2 CONT few yeats vindicated the wisdom of the committee, as was abundantly testified
2 CONT by a second church, built upon the place selected by them.  He was a large
2 CONT landholder both in Norwich and Lebanon.  His wife's name appears on the list of
2 CONT the Lebvanon church in 1701; but his own name was not added until 1707.  In
2 CONT 1687, February 13, the town of Norwich granted him a parcel of land at Trading
2 CONT Cove Brook, "by his Father's, to be laid out by measure, 30 or 40 rods wide the
2 CONT length of his father's land."  He died in Lebanon, May 10, 1717, and his wife,
2 CONT Oct 5, 1743.

2 CONT 1665, and to have married a Mary Clark, Oct. 29, 1686.  ...were among the
2 CONT fifty-one original proprietors of Lebanon, as appears in Hoadley's edition of
2 CONT Conn. Colonial Records, iv, 514.

2 CONT Christopher, spent his youth, probably with his Mother in Windsor.  If the
2 CONT Norwich records are authority, he was born in England, in the year 1629, and of
2 CONT course was not far from four years of his age when the family came to this
2 CONT country.  He seems to have possessed the spirit and to have shared the fortunes
2 CONT of his brother Christopher.  With him he appears at Saybrook, where, in October
2 CONT 1653, he married Sarah, daughter of John Clarke, of Saybrook, and later of
2 CONT Milford.  In 1660 he joins the colonists who settled Norwich, and thenceforward
2 CONT stands among the first of that important settlement, both in church and state.
2 CONT Here his house lot was also in a central and comanding positions, and the
2 CONT records show him to have been a large land-holder, and in worldly matters, and
2 CONT enterprising man.   He was chosen, soon after the removal to Norwich, deacon of
2 CONT Mr. Fitch's church, in which office he served with acceptance, until, in
2 CONT cosequence of his infirmities, he was succeeded by his som, in 1696.  In 1674,
2 CONT he, with that other veteran and tried pioneer, Thos. Leflingwell, represented
2 CONT Norwich in the general court, and he again was a member of the body in 1685.
2 CONT In 1686 the town granted him some thirty acres of pasture, westward of Goodman
2 CONT Sluman.    In 1690, and again in 1696, he was the townsman.  In 1694, he was
2 CONT appointed a committee to treat with Mr. Jabez Fitch, with respect to his
2 CONT helping and succeeding his father in the work of the inistry.  In the same year
2 CONT he was also on a committee to search out and report on the deficiencies inthe
2 CONT records.   I 1697 he was one of the committee toseat the meeting house.  In
2 CONT 1700 he was appointed on a commission to deed anew, lands about whose titles
2 CONT disputes had arisen, or would be likely to arise.   In 1703, April 27, he and
2 CONT his son Simon deed away thirty acres of pasture land, west of the great plans,
2 CONT to John Gifford.  The following is copied from the Windham Probate records: "To
2 CONT all Christian people to whom these presents may come: Know ye that I, Simon
2 CONT Huntington, sen., of Norwich, in the county of New London, in the colony of
2 CONT Connecticut, in New England, have of my free will, given, granted, unto my son
2 CONT Joseph Huntington, of the same town, county, and colony aforesaid, and do by
2 CONT these presents, give, grant, and pass over my whole right title and interest in
2 CONT and unto our thousand acre interest, or one allotment, in the new plantation,
2 CONT above Norwich, that was willed by Joshua, Sachem, son of Uncas.  I, the
2 CONT aforesaid Simon H., have freely and absolutely given, alienated and passed over
2 CONT unto the aforesaid Joseph Huntington, my whole allotment, situated and being in
2 CONT the southeast quarter of aforesaid plantation above Norwich...March 2, 1691.
2 CONT Deed acknowledged Jan 24, 1692."  Deacon Huntington died in Norwich, June 28,
2 CONT 1706, aged 87 years, and Sarah, his wife, died in Milford, in 1721, aged 88
2 CONT years.
1 NOTE FIRST PURITAN SETTLERS OF CT, BY R.R. HINMAN, PG.149: Simon Huntington at
2 CONT Norwich, 1660, appears to have been another family from the of Thomas of
2 CONT Windsor.  He was made freeman in 1663, under the Charter, at Hartford.
2 CONT PAGE 34: Thomas Huntington is found first upon the land record at Windsor, in
2 CONT 1656, he probably came some time before.  He left Windsor and moved to
