2 CONT 08/29/92, I visited Forest Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Kimberlin 
2 CONT Heights, Knox Co. TN.  While there, I met Ruby Dodson Rollins, Chipley's 
2 CONT sister-in-law. She showed us his grave in the church cemetary. I made 
2 CONT pictures.  Norma Jean Johnson Messer (about 50 years old) was Hazel Dodson 
2 CONT Henderson's daughter (Chipley's step daughter. She (Norma Jean) is Vice 
2 CONT President of Better Business Bureau in Ashville, NC. Her home phone is 
2 CONT 704-298-0362 and her office phone is 704-253-2392.  Her mother and Chipley 
2 CONT were married about 1947 or 1948 and they all lived in Iron City, Georgia 
2 CONT where Chipley was Station Agent for the Atlantic Coast Line RR and also 
2 CONT the Town Clerk.  Ruby Rollins daughter is Wanda and her phone number in 
2 CONT Kimberlin Heights is 615-573-7912.  A nephew of Ruby was also there and he 
2 CONT had visited with Chipley many times on the way to Panama City, FL. He said 
2 CONT that Chipley was into woodwork and made whirley jigs and furniture. Also 
2 CONT that Chipley had a large scale model train setup. We know that Chipley 
2 CONT lived in Iron City, GA at least from 1947 to 1963 and probable long before 
2 CONT that.  Ruby said that Aunt Ruth had finally married and her name was 
2 CONT Parrish.  Also Aunt Ruth had died. She had worked as a clerk at the 
2 CONT shipyard.  None of the people at the church cemetary had heard of me or my 
2 CONT Uncle John or my Grandparents.  They said Chipley never mentioned us. 
2 CONT However, they had heard of Chipley's two daughters.  Ruby's address is:  
2 CONT Ruby Rollins  1701 Kimberlin Heights Drive Knoxville, TN 37920.   ALL 
2 CONT PRESENT EMPHASIZED THAT I RESEMBLED CHIPLEY.  Later that week, they sent 
2 CONT me some pictures of Chipley.  I do resemble him, but the pictures remind 
2 CONT me of my grandfather, Pa Henderson.

2 CONT We know that Chipley lived in Iron City, Georgia from 1947 to 1961 and 
2 CONT probably lived there before that.

2 CONT December 1992, My grandson, Ronnie, and I visited Mr. J. H. Heartsill in 
2 CONT Greenville, Ala.  Mr. Heartsill says that he and Chipley were best friends 
2 CONT for many years and that he attended Chipley's funeral.  Following are 
2 CONT exerpts from some stories that he told Ronnie and me.
2 CONT 
2 CONT "Chips folks were Duncans and Kennedys.  He came to see them ofter and 
2 CONT stayed at their houses when he came to visit". "The old house near the 
2 CONT Andress cemetery was built for Chipley.  He lived in it for several years 
2 CONT in the late 30's and early 40's." "John T (Chip's father) had a house 
2 CONT behind Chipley's.  It burned but there is still a well there" "Once, 
2 CONT Chipley rented the property out and the tennant was secretly logging the 
2 CONT timber on the property in violation of the rental agreement. After 
2 CONT visiting with the tennant about the matter, the tennant swore that he was 
2 CONT not logging the property and Chip, apparently satisfied, caught the bus 
2 CONT back to Georgia.  He got off the bus in Luvern and got a taxi back to 
2 CONT Greenville and caught the tennant logging the property." "Chip loved to 
2 CONT farm and did so for two or three years.  He had one old mule and did all 
2 CONT of the work himself.  His neighbor, old man Hurt (who was a snake in the 
2 CONT grass) got into an argument with Chip about who could grow the most cotton 
2 CONT per acre.  Old man Hurt had the latest in equipment and a  number of black 
2 CONT folks working for him and had been a farmer for many years.  All Chip had 
2 CONT was himself, that old mule, and no experience. He had never even lived on 
2 CONT a farm.  Both men planted their cotton and when it was up and begining to 
2 CONT bloom, it was evident that old man Hurt was going to have the most cotton, 
2 CONT but just to make sure, the old man slipped into Chip's field in the middle 
2 CONT of the night and poured salt all over Chip's cotton.  This  killed most of 
2 CONT the plants in Chip's field, but it represented only a minor setback for 
2 CONT Chip.  He made friends with the black people who worked for old man Hurt 
2 CONT and paid them to steal the cotton from Hurt's fields and bring it to his 
2 CONT field.  Each night they would steal some cotton from Mr. Hurt's field and 
2 CONT stick it on Chip's dead plants.  After about a month of this, it was time 
2 CONT to judge to see who had raised the most cotton per acre.  Mr Hurt's field 
2 CONT was brown and bare. Chip's field was snow white" "The Andress cemetery is 
2 CONT public property  and so is the road leading to the cemetery."

2 CONT "Gleam of Hope"
2 CONT 
2 CONT Long is the way of life and hard.  Yet it is before us and from this fated 
2 CONT road we cannot turn.  In makin life's journey there are many by-paths to 
2 CONT lead us astray but by pushing onward there is one road that will lead to 
2 CONT success.  It lies through troubles, disappointments and fields of patient 
2 CONT earnest labor.  There are mountains to climb, deserts to cross and streams 
2 CONT to bridge.  As a reward though it promises a crowning triumph and all who 
2 CONT travel it to the end are led by a "gleam of hope".  It goes before and 
2 CONT guides us a The Star of the East guided the Wise Men.  The poet says that 
2 CONT "the miserable have no other medicine but only hope".  It keeps the 
2 CONT shadows of discouragement and despondency from falling on our path and we 
2 CONT are happy and cheerful.  Then how pleasently everything moves on!  The 
2 CONT songs of the birds are sweeter, the sky seems clearer, the ground has a 
2 CONT brighter green, the trees have a richer foliage, the flowers a more 
2 CONT fragrant smell.  This is the only happy life. If times are hard, it will 
2 CONT make them no easier by wearing a gloony and sad countenance.  "A hopefull 
2 CONT spirit will discern the lilver lining of the blackest cloud."  Troubles 
2 CONT should not discurage us because none are free from them and perhaps it is 
2 CONT well that none should be for they give tone to life and courage to man.  A 
2 CONT life with out something to hope for and to guide it is no life at all.  
2 CONT That is why so many fall by the way side.  They are content to drift along 
2 CONT with the current of time and thus spend their lives in idleness.  But when 
2 CONT clutched in the cold embrace of death they look back over the worthless 
2 CONT years spent and utter in horrivle accents the saddest words known to human 
2 CONT ears: "If I could only hve one more chance"  Now they have passed away and 
2 CONT the world never knew of their lives.  How sad that we do not make use of 
2 CONT the opportunities which God gives us.  However weary we may be, His 
2 CONT promises never cease to shine, to cheer and to strengthen.  If we desire 
2 CONT to live a life with out trial then we must die half a man.  Every one must 
2 CONT take life as it comes and not wait for Fate to put you in Fortune's way 
2 CONT for "The busy world shoves angrily aside, the man who stands with arms 
2 CONT akimbo set, until occasion tells him what to do; and he who waits to have 
2 CONT his task marked out, shall die and leave his errand unfullfilled."  Too 
2 CONT many of us expect only the good things of life and these are the ones that 
2 CONT have the most troubles and disappointments, and acorn is not an oak tree 
2 CONT when it is spruted.  It must go through long summers and fierce winters.  
2 CONT It has to endure all that frost and snow and thunder and storms and 
2 CONT side-striking winds can bring it before it is a full grown oak.  These are 
2 CONT rough teachers, but rugged schoolmasters make rugged pupils.  Again there 
2 CONT are some who have never attained success that are continually whining at 
2 CONT luck and what it has done for someone else.   In most cases though, good 
2 CONT or bad luck is but a synonym of good or bad judgement.  To believe these 
2 CONT people there was never a lot so hard as theirs but those who know their 
2 CONT history will generally tell you that their life has been but one long tale 
2 CONT of opportunities disregarded.  Many do with opportunities as children do 
2 CONT at the sea shore - they fill their little hands with sand and then let if 
2 CONT fall though until it is all gone.  Neglected opportunities never come 
2 CONT back.  We must "make hay while the sun shines" and "gather roses while 
2 CONT they bloom".  If we would turn our steps into the highway of noble aim and 
2 CONT earnest work, we must hope, not though for that which is in the past but 
2 CONT that of the future.  A strong mind always hopes and has cause to do so, 
2 CONT for it knows "the mutability of human affairs". Does not the grand old 
2 CONT gardener rejoice, as he sits in the spring evening after the days work is 
2 CONT done  and watchs the rich foliage and luxriant blossoms of the fruit 
2 CONT trees, proising heavy laden branches of exquisite and delicious fruit in 
2 CONT the coming autumn.  Does not the traveler, standing at early dawn upon the 
2 CONT hilltop and gazing upon the magnificant panorama gradually disclosing its 
2 CONT beauty and as the mists begin to disappear, rejoice in the hope that the 
2 CONT landscape will soon be revealed in all its perfection an splendor?  The 
2 CONT setting of a great hope is like the setting of the sun. The brighness of 
2 CONT our lives is gone, the shadows of evening fall around us and the world 
2 CONT itself seems but a dim reflection.  Hope encourages all things good, great 
2 CONT and noble.  It whispers liberty to the slave, freedom to the captive, 
2 CONT supplies to the needy, rest to the weary and life to the dying.  It has 
2 CONT susshine in its eyes, encouragement on its tongue and inspiration in its 
2 CONT hand.  We should cultivate well this ever-shining flower fo the spirit.  
2 CONT It is the evergreen of life that grows at the eastern gate of the soul's 
2 CONT garden.

2 CONT J. T. HENDERSON DIES IN PENSACOLA FEB. 14

2 CONT J. T. Henderson died February 14th at his home in Pensacola, Fla. after an 
2 CONT illness of several weeks.  He was 81 years old.  Mr. Henderson was a 
2 CONT native of Butler County and in early life was employed by the L. & N. R. 
2 CONT R. Co. at Georgiana, from which place he was transfered to Florida and 
2 CONT after 49 years of service as track foreman and storekeeper he was retired. 
2 CONT  He had many friends throughout Alabama and Florida who will mourn his 
2 CONT death.
2 CONT      The body, accompanied by his children, was brought to Greenville on 
2 CONT Train No. 4 Saturday afternoon and carried to the home of Mr. W. J. 
2 CONT Barrett for the  night.  The funeral services were held there Sunday 
2 CONT morning at ten o'clock by Rev. S. W. Andress, where a large concourse of 
2 CONT relatives and friends had gathered to pay their last sad respects.
2 CONT      Burial was in the Andress cemetery where a beautiful ceremony was 
2 CONT conducted by the Masons of which Mr. Henderson had been a member for fifty 
2 CONT years.  He was a member of the Baptist Church of Pensacola.
2 CONT      He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. H. H. Parish, Pensacola; two 
2 CONT sons, Chipley A. Henderson, Pensacola and John T. B. Henderson of Mobile; 
2 CONT two brothers, J. M. Henderson, Georgiana and Will H. Henderson, Chapman; 
2 CONT three sisters, Mrs M. A. Ledlow and Mrs. Lizzie Carpenter, Georgiana and 
2 CONT Mrs. Joe S. Hollman, Pensacola.
2 CONT     God saw fit to take him all for his own.  His mansion was prepared to 
2 CONT go to it, is all the consolation we have.  One consoling thought is to 
2 CONT know we can meet him in the Great Beyond.  Peace to his ashes.

2 CONT relatives in Aiken County.

2 CONT The funeral was held Wednesday at the Griffin Funeral Home Chapel with the 
2 CONT Revs. Joe Piercy and James Bagby officiating. Burial was in Hollywood 
2 CONT Cemetery. A native of Louisana, Mr. Carnell was a retired Methodist 
2 CONT minister. He joined the Methodist conference in 1912. He spent 10 years in 
2 CONT the Tennessee Senate and seven years in the House of Representatives as 
2 CONT Chaplain, serving under six govenors. He was a member of Lodge No. 211 of 
2 CONT Woodlawn, Memphis.  He was noted for his poetry and songs, several of 
2 CONT which were published. Survivors include a brother, Harry Carnell of 
2 CONT Jackson; a sister, Lula Hamlett of Huron; three daughters, Christine 
2 CONT Blount of Aiken, Louise Thomas of Birmingham, and Veleta Smith of Jackson; 
2 CONT a grandson Ron Henderson of Aiken and three other grandchildren; eight 
2 CONT great grandchildren; three of a Aiken, Ron Henderson, Jr., Steve 
2 CONT Henderson, and Rodger Henderson; and one great-great grandchild, Beth

2 CONT John William Carnell was born in Louisanna in 1884, the third child of J. 
2 CONT S. and Sarah D. Carnal, who were the parents of ten other children. The 
2 CONT family moved to West Tennessee when John was a young man, and he was a 
2 CONT member of the Old Mt. Pleasant Church on the Mifflin Circuit when 
2 CONT recommeded for License to Preach, which he later received at the Lexington 
2 CONT District Conference, meeting at Sardis, Tennessee, on July 7, 1905.  He 
2 CONT supplied several circuits as a Local Preacher before being admitted on 
2 CONT trial into the Memphis Annual Conference on Nov. 12, 1912, and served for 
2 CONT 40 years in the Conference. Among the churches served by Brother Carnell 
2 CONT were Bithel Springs, TRoy, Greenfield, McKenzie, Bemis, Somerville, 
2 CONT Lambuth Memorial at Jackson and St. Mark's, Everett Memorial and Jackson 
2 CONT Avenue in Memphis. He served as Chaplain of the State House of 
2 CONT Representatives, and the State Senate for a period of 17 years.  He was 
2 CONT made a Master Mason on August 20, 1907. Brother Carnell was an effective 
2 CONT pastor and preacher.  He was very evangelistic and added hundreds of new 
2 CONT members to the Charges he served. In addition to this, he was a poet and a 
2 CONT song writer.  Many of his poems have been published. After retiring, he 
2 CONT served as a retired supply in the arkansas Conference for six years.  He 
2 CONT then moved back to Tennessee and lived his remaining years with his

2 CONT known and admired women, passed away this morning at 1:30 o'clock at her 
2 CONT home in the Madison Hall section following an illness of complications. 
2 CONT She was a member of the Benis Methodist church, but prior to her 
2 CONT membership there she was a member of the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church, 
2 CONT where she had been quite acitve in her younger days.

2 CONT Mrs. Carnell was admired for her splendid Christian character and her 
2 CONT passing comes as the source of much regret throughout this section where 
2 CONT she was so well known.

2 CONT Besides her husband, she is survived by six sons, M. A. and A. B. Carnell 
2 CONT of Bemis, F. L. and H. G. Carnell of Jackson, A. D. Carnell of Deansburg, 
2 CONT and the Rev. J. W. Carnell of Memphis, formerly pastor of the Bemis 
2 CONT Methodist church and the Lambuth Memorial Methodist church in this city; , 
2 CONT a daughter, Mrs Lula Hamlett of Huron; five brothers, W. M., J. L., T. A., 
2 CONT J. H., and G. M. Brecheen, all of Louisiana.

2 CONT The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at the Mount Pleasant Methodist

1 NOTE The Andress cemetery is located on County Hiway 65, three miles north of 
2 CONT its intersection with Hiway 10 E. from Greenvile, Ala.  There is a dirt 
2 CONT trail on the right side of the hiway, just past a two story white frame 
2 CONT house on the left.  Turn right on the dirt trail and go about a mile and a 
2 CONT half. At a fork in the trail, keep to the right.  Go to the top of the 
2 CONT hill to a trailer (owned by Billy Joe Heartsill).  The cemetery is to the

2 CONT STEPHEN FRANCIS - Son of William and Anne Rhame was born March 22, 1824, 
2 CONT in Monroe County, Alabama.  He moved with his father first to Wilcox 
2 CONT County then to Butler County, Alabama to the Mt. Zion Community. He 
2 CONT married Sarah J. East January 25, 1849 at Letohatchie, Alabama, Lowndes 
2 CONT County to whom was born 11 children.  He was engaged in farming and became 
2 CONT a large land owner in Butler County.  He died April 25 1908, Sarah died 
2 CONT March 25, 1909.  Both are buried in the William Andress family cemetery.

2 CONT has been made covering the period 1908 to 1920.  No record was found to 
2 CONT exist of the death of Stephen F. Andress died on April 25, 1908 in Butler

2 CONT In 1811, the Librarian Society of Wilkes was formed and lasted for several 
2 CONT years.  The club met the first Tuesday of every month. Regulations 
2 CONT stipulated that no more that two volumns could be taken out at a time and 
2 CONT late fees amounted to twelve and a half cents a week.  The first officers 
2 CONT were Benjamin Porter, President; David Hillhouse, Librarian; William 
2 CONT Dearing, Treasurer; and John Holliday, Secretary.  Other subscribers 
2 CONT included John Graves, William M. Kain, James Wingfield, David Butler, John 
2 CONT Terrell, William Simpson, James Corbett, Timothy Roby, david Plumb, John H 
2 CONT Pope, Meschack Robertson, and Majer Henderson.  In 1815 the society 
2 CONT incorporated with John K M Charlton as Librarian.  Other members added at 
2 CONT this time were Andrew Ruddle, Thomas Gresham, John Bunch, Thomas Wooten, 
2 CONT and Michael Randolph.  The society was disbanded in 1816 when the library 
2 CONT was sold at auction.

2 CONT From the Hannibal Guy and Mary F. Andress book: "WILLIAM ANDRESS" Son of 
2 CONT Joseph and Ann, born in South Carolina September 8, 1778.  Our first 
2 CONT record of William was found as a witness to deeds of land sold by his 
2 CONT father Joseph, to Thomas Mims, in Horry County, and quoted herein. Next as 
2 CONT the youngest son of Joseph and Ann in Partition Proceedings, covering the 
2 CONT disposal of the estate of Joseph in Sumter County Court Records, it being 
2 CONT also quoted herein.  William married Anne Rhame, daughter of Jeremiaah 
2 CONT Rhame, in Sumter District South Carolina (Record shown in Sumter County 
2 CONT Probate Judge's office, Sumter, South Carolina, Bundle 82, Package 2) 
2 CONT November 10, 1803.  William and Anne moved to Monroe County, Alabama in 
2 CONT 1819 along with his brother Stephen, living for a while there and then 
2 CONT moving to Wilcox County, Alabama, near Allentown, Alabama.  The 1830 
2 CONT Federal Census shows him there.  In 1831 he purchased from the Federal 
2 CONT Land Bank at Cahaba, Ala., several tracts of land, a more complete 
2 CONT description of which is a recorded in the Secretary of State's office, 
2 CONT Montgomery, Ala., Wilcox County.  In 1836, William sold his holdings in 
2 CONT Wilcox County and purchased from the Federal Land Bank, Cahaba, Alabama 
2 CONT (Certificate No. 26992), Butler County, Ala. 40 acres of land as follows: 
2 CONT The NW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 Section 13, TSHP 10-N Range 16E and here build 
2 CONT his home. He also purchased the following lands in Butler County from 
2 CONT Thomas Tinsley: The NW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 Section 13-T-10 R-16E The W 1/2 
2 CONT of the NE 1/4 Section 13 T-10 R-15E The SE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 Section 
2 CONT 13-T-10 R-15E. William and Anne were parents of nine children, six of whom 
2 CONT lived to share in his estate.  He died August 10, 1841.  Anne died 
2 CONT November 16, 1870.  Both were buried in their private cemetery located on 
2 CONT the above 40 acres originaly purchased.  He left no will and the estate 
2 CONT was settled in Butler County Alabama Probate Office, Greenville, Ala. and 
2 CONT recorded in Deed Book No. 4, page 267, sharing in the  estate were: 
2 CONT Jeremiah, John N., William James, Stephen Francis, Sarah Ann, and Martha. 
2 CONT William's family Bible was handed down to his baby son Stephen Francis who 
2 CONT was born in 1824, 17 years befor his Father died.  A family record was 
2 CONT made in this Bible.

2 CONT the third in a family of six children born to Joshua and Sarah W (Dunn) 
2 CONT Carnal.  Joshua was a native of NC born in 1808. He received a fair 
2 CONT education and followed the occupation of farmer.  In 1832, Jshua came to 
2 CONT Henderson Co and about 1844 came to Carroll Co. where he purchased land in

2 CONT Company under Sir Edward Sandys.  It was the growing custom for the best 
2 CONT of families to "apprentice" their sons as soon as possible to a seven-year 
2 CONT period with some London merchant, and no doubt his family was of good 
2 CONT standing.  The use of the word "servant" in the early centuries, 
2 CONT especially the sixteenth and seventeenth should not be taken too 
2 CONT seriously.  Every individual not a member of the "nobility" or of the 
2 CONT "Clergy" in order to exist in the country at all, had to exhibit by word 
2 CONT and action the appearance of humility.  History has proved that much of 
2 CONT this apparent humbleness of spirti disclosed by Bradford and other early 
2 CONT writers of History, was merely the current form of expression, and that 
2 CONT underneath all of the demanded humility was a seething and militant 
2 CONT individualism. The Will and Inventory of Edward Doty is recorded in 
2 CONT Plymouth Co. Wills, Vol II, Pt I,Page 14-16. He died at Plymouth, 
2 CONT Thursday, Aug 23 to Sept 2, 1655. and his widow, Faithe (Clarke) Doty, 
2 CONT married second at Plymouth on Thursday, Mart 14-24 1666-7, John Phillips 
2 CONT of Marshfield.  She was buried at Marshfield on Tuesday, Dec 21-31 1675,

2 CONT descended from the same line and I didn't know the "T" in John T. 
2 CONT Henderson's name was for Thomas.  It always helps to compare notes and 
2 CONT learn from each other.  I have not found where John T and Lucinda 
2 CONT Henderson are buried in Butler County. They were both born in Georgia and 
2 CONT came to Alabama about 1830.  John T. was sheriff of Butler County in 1840 
2 CONT and lived east of Greenville and was a charter member of Damascus Baptist 
2 CONT Church in 1847.  In 1850's the family moved to South Butler and operated a 
2 CONT store and was also Postmaster.  He died in Oct 1857 and Lucinda in 1858, 
2 CONT before his estate was settled.  There is a copy of estate papers in the 
2 CONT Courthouse in Greenville but the day I was there the copying machine was 
2 CONT broken so did not get a copy. I have only gotten as far back as Joseph 
2 CONT Henderson, who came from Virginia to Wilkes County, Ga.  Do not know where 
2 CONT in Virginia - If you find out anything on that let me know. There is a 
2 CONT book "Jasper Co. Ga. Cemetery and Bible Records" by Jewel Moots Lancaster 
2 CONT that has acopppy of Shadrack McMichael's bible.  Also "Early Marriages - 
2 CONT Jasper Co.Ga" has info on McMichaels.  If you can't find a copy of those 
2 CONT books, let me know and I'll copy what I have and send you.  I'm still 
2 CONT working on the fgs for Shadroack and "Polly" McMichael, trying to figure 
2 CONT children from the grandchildren.  I have a copy of the will of John 
2 CONT McMichael, father of Shadrack.  I have corresponded with Lois McMichael in 
2 CONT Jackson, Ga. and she told me that John (father of Shadrack), with his 
2 CONT brothers William and David came from South Carolina to Green County, Ga. 
2 CONT and then on to Jasper Co. , Ga. where they all died.  I have gone no

2 CONT Georgiana, Alabama, who is the daughter of James Monroe Henderson (son of

2 CONT 48 years at the 1st Methodist church in Georgiana.  I took her picture and
