Will of Amos Hollis, dated April 23, 1824


In the Name of God, Amen. I Amos Hollis of Harford County in the State of Maryland, being sick and weak in body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding, Considering the Certainty of death, and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle any worldly affairs, and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to Call me hence, do therefore make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following; that is to Say. First and principally, I Commit my soul unto the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth, to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors herein after named after my debts and funeral charges are paid, I devise and bequeath as follows I give and devise unto my two sons Amos Hollis and Benjamin Hollis, my Plantation wheron I now dwell Known by the name of Hollises refuge Containing by patent about one Hundred forty acres, more or less to them and their heirs and assigns forever should Either of my sons die before the property is divided my will is that the survivor shall have the whole. ITEM I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Martha Rockhold the wife of James Rockhold one Hundred and Fifty Dollars, during her life only, with Legal Interest from the day of my death, and after her decease to her present Children still living to be equally divided between them, under this express Proviso nevertheless, that my Executors shall not be compelled to pay into the hands of the said James Rockhold anything herein bequeathed unto my said daughter Martha Rockhold but that the same shall remain and Continue in the hands of my said Executors, their Executors, or such person or persons as they shall appoint during the life of the said James Rockhold and that during his life, the profits thereof shall be paid to the said Martha Rockhold, and that any receipts or writings witnessing the payment of such profits to the said Martha Rockhold and signed by law, though covert, shall be sufficient discharges to my Executors, or person or persons by them appointed as aforesaid ITEM, after paying the above mentioned Legacy to my Daughter Martha Rockhold, I devise and bequeath to my said two sons all the residue of my personal Estate, to be equally divided amongst them, to them their heirs and assigns forever in equal proportion share and share alike.
And lastly I do hereby Constitute and appoint my two sons Amos Hollis and Benjamin Hollis to be my executors of this my last will and testament revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made ratifying and Confirming this and none other, to be my last will and testament ~
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, and affixed my seal this twenty third Day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and twenty four
